I don’t think we Miami Dolphins fans felt good about our quarterback situation behind starter Tua Tagovailoa going into last season, and it was probably even worse by the time the season ended. The front office felt differently, and sadly, we fans were once again correct about something that should have seemed obvious to the people who were hired and paid very well to know better and to handle it.
Sadly, as many predicted, Tua would get injured again, and it didn’t take long. He did not even make it a full two weeks before suffering another injury that would keep him out just a little over a month. By the time he returned to the field, the team had already dug a massive hole they could never dig out of, thus costing them a shot at the playoffs.
After Tua went down, so did backup QB Sylar Thompson in week three. Then came in the equally underwhelming Tim Boyle. The team then signed Tyler Huntley, who had more to give the team than the other two backups, but even that was a little too little. Boyle did not make it through the season in Miami and later joined the New York Giants. Boyle is now with the Tennessee Titans. Thompson is now a Pittsburgh Steeler, while Huntley is a free agent.
That brings us to our sole backup now. As all of you know, Miami signed former New York Jets starter and Denver Broncos backup Zach Wilson as Tagovailoa’s backup. Wilson has been noted for being what is generously described as immature in the past. In addition, despite showing flashes here and there, his play on the field has been less than impressive or even good overall.
The hope is that Wilson will be a pretty good upgrade over the three backups from last season. The kind of guy who can, at the very least, keep the team’s hope of making the playoffs afloat if Tua is to again go down for any extended period of time. The opinions of this signing from fans that I have seen range from this is the worst signing ever to this is the guy that will sooner rather than later take over for Tua Tagovailoa. But what do you think?
So tonight’s Phinsider Question Of The Day: Do you think Zach Wilson will prove to be a solid signing if or when Tua Tagovailoa goes down due to injury? Do you believe that Wilson is the kind of guy who can step up and keep the winning going if he’s expected to fill in for a few to several weeks?
