Is Brian Daboll right to keep Jones as the Giants’ starting quarterback?
The 2024 season was always going to be about Daniel Jones for the New York Giants.
We know the Giants tried to trade up for Drake Maye, and that Brian Daboll would have backed a trade up for Jayden Daniels if such a move was possible. Neither of those routes were open to the Giants so their plan was to see, once and for all, whether Daniel Jones is The Guy.
So far the returns aren’t encouraging. Jones has thrown the ball to the wrong team five times (though Derek Stingley dropped the first one) through six quarters of preseason and regular season football. He had a fantastic throw to Darius Slayton against the Texans, but has also been consistently inconsistent in his accuracy and ball placement.
Head coach Brian Daboll said on Monday that Jones will remain the Giants’ starting quarterback for this week’s game against the Washington Commanders. The Giants clearly believe that Jones is still their best option at quarterback, or at least that he deserves more of an opportunity to show that he can be their franchise quarterback.
This week may be his best opportunity against a team that many believe is one of the very worst in the NFL, with a new coaching regime, and a rookie quarterback making the second start of his career.
On the flip side, there has been a growing segment of he Giants’ fanbase that has seen enough since the end of the Giants 28-6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. There have been calls to bench Jones in favor of Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito, either out of a desire to see if one of them is a better option than Jones or to avoid an injury that could trigger his injury guarantee for the 2025 season.
So we wanted to put the question to the Big Blue View community: Is Daboll right to keep Jones as his starting quarterback, or is it time to move on?
We also wanted to check in on fans opinion on how many games the team will win. A week ago 64% of fans believed that the Giants would win seven or more games this year. Has that changed or are fans still taking the “over” on the projection of 6.5 wins?
