More pass rush depth.
The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing Patrick Johnson, their seventh-round pick (No. 234 overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft, back to the City of Brotherly Love on a one-year contract. This news comes via a report from NFL insider Diana Russini.
We recently wrote about Johnson potentially returning to Philly in our Eagles roster outlook series:
REVIEW: Johnson had a pretty good summer but the Eagles waived him on September 16 to make room for Nick Gates on the roster. He was claimed by the New York Giants, where he only logged 46 defensive snaps. Johnson will be a free agent in March. Wouldn’t mind if the Eagles brought him back on a minimum deal.
Johnson turned 27 in January. He very well might be what he is at this point; a depth edge rusher who mainly contributes on special teams. But that’s fine.
The Eagles had a need for more pass rusher bodies with Josh Sweat leaving in free agency, Brandon Graham potentially set to retire, and Bryce Huff reportedly on trade block. The Eagles signed fellow edge defender Josh Uche on Thursday and now they’re also adding Johnson to a position group that primarily features Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt.
The Birds will likely look to add another pass rusher or two in the 2025 NFL Draft.
