The Miami Dolphins signed experienced depth behind De’Von Achane and Jaylen Wright.
While De’Von Achane and Jaylen Wright are projected to be major contributors in 2025, the Miami Dolphins needed some experience at running back after Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. hit free agency.

According to FOX Sports NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Dolphins found a fit early in free agency, signing former Minnesota Vikings and Las Vegas Raiders running back Alexander Mattison. Contract details have not yet been announced.
A 2019 third-round pick out of Boise State, Mattison spent his first five seasons in Minnesota before rushing for 420 yards and four touchdowns on 132 carries last season with the Raiders. A capable receiver, he’s caught at least 30 passes in three of four seasons.
The Dolphins used a pair of third-round picks to select Achane and Wright, but adding a back with five years of experience—who’s appeared in 89 games—is a wise addition when considering their combined 43 appearances.
Mattison, 26, set career highs in attempts (180) and rushing yards (700) while appearing in 16 games for the Vikings in 2023, but he stepped up as a receiver with the Raiders last season. He arrives in Miami after setting a career-best with 36 receptions on 48 targets while averaging 8.2 yards per reception last season with the Las Vegas.
Drafting a running back in three straight years is certainly a possibility, considering Miami has 11 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. Achane touched the ball 281 times last season and has established his role as coach Mike McDaniel’s lead back. That said, the Dolphins needed more reliable depth, even if it’s in a limited role.
