Eagles practice squad news: 2 players in (including former 49ers draft pick), 2 out

Changes to Philadelphia’s scout team.

The Philadelphia Eagles officially announced four transactions late Tuesday afternoon. Here’s an overview:

  • WR Danny Gray and DB A.J. Woods were signed to the practice squad.
  • WR Griffin Hebert and LB Brandon Smith were released from the practice squad.

Let’s sort through this news on a player-by-player basis.

DANNY GRAY

Gray, 25, originally entered the league as a third-round pick (No. 105 overall) by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2022 NFL Draft.

As a rookie, Gray was the 49ers’ leading receiver in the preseason with four catches for 123 yards and one touchdown. Here’s that highlight:

In the regular season, Gray played just 87 offensive snaps and 19 special teams snaps. He logged a single reception on seven targets for 10 yards. He also had one carry go for nine yards.

Gray did not play in 2023 after being placed on injured reserve prior to the season. Gray had just one catch for 13 yards this summer before the 49ers decided to waive him.

The Eagles seem to feel like Gray still has some untapped potential. Gray is now one of four receivers on the practice squad behind the five receivers on the team’s active roster.

(Side note: did the Eagles like the 49ers’ 2022 draft class or what? They now have Gray and Tyrion Davis-Price on their practice squad. They also unsuccessfully tried to claim Samuel Womack off waivers.)

A.J. WOODS

The Eagles now have an A.J. Woods and a JT Woods on their practice squad. And they’re both defensive backs. Go figure.

A.J. Woods played cornerback at Pitt before signing with the Washington Commanders as an undrafted rookie free agent following the 2024 NFL Draft. The Commanders waived him in their cuts down from 90 to 53 players.

GRIFFIN HEBERT

Hebert has bounced on and off the team since the Eagles originally signed him last December.

BRANDON SMITH

A little surprised to see Smith go. He could’ve made the roster in other years when the Eagles were much weaker at linebacker. I guess the Eagles’ willingness to let him go signals that Devin White’s injury isn’t too serious?

In case you missed it, the Eagles also lost practice squad center Dylan McMahon to the Los Angeles Rams, who signed him to their roster earlier on Tuesday.

The Eagles still have one practice squad spot open.

Each player below is eligible to be temporarily elevated to the active roster up to three times unless otherwise noted.
