The punt returner could still return to Philly, however.
The Philadelphia Eagles will not be tendering restricted free agent Britain Covey, according to a report from PhillyVoice’s Jimmy Kempski.
This development means that Covey is now an unrestricted free agent who can negotiate with all 32 teams.
The Eagles deciding not to tender Covey is hardly shocking since the minimum one-year offer is worth about $3.26 million. That’s too much money to pay to a player who has mostly been a dedicated punt returner.
Just because the Eagles didn’t tender Covey doesn’t mean he won’t be back in Philly (triple negative alert). They’ve opted not to RFA tender players before later re-signing them to lower value contracts in previous years.
Covey, who turns 28 next week, likely won’t have a very robust market. He’s arguably one of the best punt returners in the NFL, yes, but multiple injury issues limited him to just five games played in 2024. He’s also yet to really carve out a role on offense, though it looked like he was primed for more snaps in that capacity if he stayed healthy last season.
The guess here is the Eagles will be able to re-sign Covey and have him serve as their primary punt returner for at least one more season. But we’ll see if another team scoops him up instead.
