Bad news for the Birds, good news for the player.
The Philadelphia Eagles are losing rookie center Dylan McMahon to a practice squad poaching.
The Los Angeles Rams, who are dealing with multiple offensive line injuries, decided to sign McMahon to their active roster.
It’s a good opportunity for McMahon, who now gets a guaranteed three-week salary in addition to a better path to playing time.
It’s an unfortunate development for the Eagles, who are losing the player they selected with a sixth-round pick (No. 190 overall) in the 2024 NFL Draft.
McMahon seemed to show promise in the summer but apparently not enough to justify a spot on the Eagles’ roster, which came as a surprise to many. It was a relief when he was able to clear waivers and make it back to the Eagles’ practice squad.
McMahon was obviously unlikely to help the Eagles much in the short term. The team decided to temporarily elevate Nick Gates from the practice squad in Week 1 to be their backup center behind Cam Jurgens. But McMahon seemed like a good developmental player to have around for the future.
Of course, the Eagles losing practice squad offensive linemen is nothing new. Last year, Tyre Phillips, Julian Good-Jones, and Brett Toth all got poached. Teams clearly have an affinity for blockers who’ve enrolled at Jeff Stoutland University. Losing McMahon can be viewed in part as the price of the Eagles’ general offensive line success.
McMahon’s departure means the Eagles now have an open practice squad spot to fill.
