The loss of Xavier Mckinney, and McKinney’s big 2024 season, net Giants pick No. 99
The New York Giants will receive a third-round compensatory selection, No. 99 overall, in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The NFL announced the official compensatory selections Tuesday evening.
The Giants’ draft picks are now as follows:
Round 1 (No. 3)
Round (No. 34)
Round 3 (No. 65)
Round 3 (No. 99)
Round 4 (No. 105)
Round 5 (No. 154)
Round 7 (No. 219)
Round 7 (No. 246)
The compensatory pick is for the loss of Xavier McKinney in free agency a year ago. The NFL compensatory formula is based on the number of qualifying free agents signed and lost. Per the NFL, salary, playing time and postseason honors all factor into the formula.
The fact that McKinney had a career year, intercepting eight passes and being named first-team All-Pro, probably pushed the compensatory pick higher than it may otherwise have been.
The Giants have been expected to pursue a trade up from No. 3 to No. 1 in the first round of the draft, probably for Miami quarterback Cam Ward. Adding a fourth pick in the top 100 of the draft, along with having pick No. 105, gives GM Joe Schoen more maneuverability to execute a trade.
Here are the players who figured into the compensatory formula for the Giants:
- Lost: Saquon Barkley; Ben Bredeson; Xavier McKinney; A’Shawn Robinson; Tyrod Taylor
- Gained: Jermaine Eluemunor; Drew Lock; Jon Runyan; Devin Singletary
The Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins were awarded the most compensatory selections, with four each.
