Veteran fullback signs — again — to 53-man roster

Jakob Johnson is — once again — back with the New York Giants. Per Adam Schefter, the Giants have signed the veteran fullback to their 53-man roster.

So, the Big Blue View jinx has been negated for now. The Giants cut Johnson last Friday, the day a 1-on-1 interview with Johnson appeared here at Big Blue View.

Johnson has ping-ponged on and off the roster a number of times. Here is his Giants transaction timeline:

  • Aug. 16 — Signed as a free agent
  • Aug. 27 — Contract terminated in cuts from 90 to 53 players
  • Aug. 28 — Signed to practice squad
  • Aug. 29 — Signed to 53-man roster
  • Aug. 31 — Contract terminated
  • Sept. 2 — Signed to practice squad
  • Sept. 6 — Contract terminated
  • Sept. 10 — Reportedly re-signed as free agent to 53-man roster

This move was perhaps predicted by the fact that Johnson’s locker, with all of this belongings still in it, was still in place on Friday in the Giants’ locker room.

Because Johnson is a vested veteran, his contract would have been guaranteed for the entire season had he been on the roster against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1. Now, his contract is week-to-week.

The Giants could benefit from the lead-blocking Johnson offers their offense. The Giants ran 21 times for 74 yards against Minnesota, a 3.5-yards per carry average. Their longest run, 14 yards by Wan’Dale Robinson, was actually intended to be a pass that went backwards. Take that out, and the Giants averaged 3.0 yards per rush

Even though the Giants used 12 personnel (two tight ends) heavily against the Vikings, their run-blocking grade of 43.3 was worst in the league.

Johnson should help.
