2025 NFL Free Agency: Former Miami Dolphins tight end signs with the Chicago Bears

The Dolphins longest tenured player heading into the month of February is now reunited in the Windy City alongside his former Wide Receivers Coach.

Weeks after being released by the Miami Dolphins, the Chicago Bears have agreed to terms with free agent tight end Durham Smythe. The news was first reported by NFL Network Insider, Ian Rapoport.

Smythe — who was released by the Dolphins last month — was the longest tenured player on the roster heading into February. The former fourth-round pick out of Notre Dame, caught 132 receptions for 1,228 yards, and three touchdowns with Miami during his six seasons with the team. Last season, with only 364 snaps, Smythe was used primarily as a blocking tight end, catching a measly 9 of 17 targets for 53 yards. He will now be reunited with head coach Ben Johnson in Chicago — where he looks to become a part of that new and improved offense.

With Smythe out of the picture, the Dolphins will now turn to Julian Hill as the team’s inline tight end — but that doesn’t mean they won’t be active in free agency and the draft. Tons of mock drafts have Miami taking Penn State tight end Tyler Warren in the first round. And if not him, there’s plenty of other talented prospects — like LSU’s Mason Taylor 🙂 — that would fit the bill and help bolster Mike McDaniel’s offense. That’s not to mention all the players in free agency — and even those on the trade block (I might write about one later). And correct me if I’m wrong, but Tanner Conner is still out there somewhere. I swear he was supposed to be a thing.

Regardless of what the Dolphins do at the position. Durham Smythe is now a Chicago Bear, and for a guy that played under Brian Flores and Mike McDaniel for six seasons, I have nothing but the utmost respect for him. And wish him nothing but the best — except when he’s playing YOUR Miami Dolphins!

What are your thoughts on Durham Smythe signing with the Chicago Bears? Do you think he’ll have more than one first down reception in 2024? Which prospect or free agent are you looking at to bolster the tight end room this offseason? Let us know in the comments section below!
