Other Giant observations

What I heard about the Giants at NFL combine: QB plan, free agent targets and trading up | The Athletic

The Giants’ front office showed legitimate interest in Sanders during the season, with Schoen attending at least two Colorado games and making another visit with top brass to a practice late in the season. The interest in Sanders — at least compared to Ward — may have been amplified by the fact that there is much more documenting of the Colorado football program.

Schoen attended three Miami games this season with far less fanfare. He also attended a Miami practice before scouting the Hurricanes’ bowl game, according to a league source. The sense from a Miami source was that Ward made a strong impression on Schoen.

Before the Eli Manning Era began, and only five months after Tom Coughlin had been hired, the Giants signed the perfect bridge quarterback. He was not yet 33, had won a Super Bowl four seasons earlier, was a two-time NFL MVP before injuries interrupted his march to Canton.

“I believe they have to win, so that, to me, is what puts me into Aaron Rodgers’ camp,” Warner said “At the end of last year, he was, in my opinion, by far the best of those three quarterbacks. And so, if I’m looking for the best available bridge guy to win right now, Aaron Rodgers, to me, would be the guy that I’d go get while I groom another young guy.”

Giants: Aaron Rodgers and Jaxson Dart

The Giants could consider Sanders if he falls to No. 3, but the smarter play would be to load up with talent elsewhere on the roster. As for Dart: The Giants are flush with draft capital, with early second-, third- and fourth-round picks, plus an extra fourth. Dart seems to be the consensus third-best prospect at the moment, and some teams even have him ahead of Sanders. The Giants might be able to snag him at the top of the second round, but if not it wouldn’t be difficult for them to trade back up into the first round and get him — and then let him learn from Rodgers for a year.

The Giants still have to add a veteran quarterback and determine whether any of these prospects are the right fit for their organization and situation.

“Can they handle the pressure of playing in the New York market and adversity? And again, that’s what comes with being the quarterback of the New York Giants and that’s important,” Schoen said. “We’ve had a couple of prospects over the last couple of years that we didn’t think mentally could handle it even though they were physically talented, just didn’t think it would be a great fit.”

The team is reportedly bullish about Virginia Tech wide receiver Jaylin Lane, a projected seventh-round pick whom they met at last week’s Combine and at the Senior Bowl. The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the Giants were impressed with Lane’s versatile skillset and leadership.

“I talked to them here and at the Senior Bowl, but they had some new coaches here this time” Lane said. “I feel like any team that picks me, I’d give it my all, but it’d be really cool if the Giants picked me.”

Key free agents: Darius Slayton (UFA), Gunner Olszewski (UFA), Ihmir Smith-Marsette (UFA)

Nabers proved he’s a star in Year 1, generating 1,204 yards on 109 catches with seven TDs in only 15 games. Imagine if he played all 17. Imagine if he had an actual functioning quarterback! Robinson is a solid slot option who would produce more in an efficient offense. With Nabers assuming a significant role, Hyatt took a big step back in his second pro season, generating just 62 yards on eight catches in 16 games. He could get back on track if he’s given more to do in 2025. Slayton profiles as someone who will find a better deal elsewhere than if he were to return as the field-stretcher in Brian Daboll’s attack.
