Quarterback would reunite with first college coach
Sometimes, our poll results (which are conducted to test the pulse of this fan community, especially on hot-button topics) surprise me.
This was one of those cases.
We recently asked our community members if they would be on board if the Las Vegas Raiders were to sign veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota this offseason as a free agent.
If didn’t think many fans would be interested in seeing the Raiders signing Mariota, who was a backup in Las Vegas in 2020-21, again. But they were and it wasn’t really that close of a poll.
In a poll with 1,765 votes cast, 1,137 voters (64 percent) want to see Mariota signed in las Vegas, while 628 voters (36 percent) don’t approve of the team signing Mariota.
The reason why so many people are in favor of signing Mariota is it would reunite him with Chip Kelly, who just became Las Vegas’ offensive coordinator. Mariota is a free agent after backing up NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels with the Washington Commanders in 2024.
Kelly recruited Mariota to Oregon and he starred under the coach in 2012 before Kelly bolted to the NFL. Kelly later reportedly tired to trade for Mariota.
Now, with Kelly returning to the NFL as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator and Mariota being a free agent, there are rumors the Raiders could pursue him, most likely as a backup or as part of a starting competition.
If that happens, it appears many in the fan base would be pleased.
