Tobin was short but precise
It was clear the Jermaine Burton didn’t have the best rookie season due to some self-inflicted wounds from the former Alabama Crimson Tide standout.
The talent is certainly there, which is why the Bengals took a leap of faith in the young receiver and drafted him in the third round. They knew what they were getting themselves into, as off-field issues seemed to be the main reason Burton wasn’t a first-round pick.
He ended his rookie season with four receptions for 107 yards. Most of his production happened in a three-week stretch from late October to the middle of November, where he had a reception in each of those three games.
However, the 2024 NFL Draft pick didn’t have the season many expected, and Duke Tobin certainly made a statement on his status earlier this week.
“I can’t want it more for him than he wants it for himself, and he’s going to have to demonstrate that. He’s an immensely talented guy. We’re not giving up on him, but he’s going to have to start showing it now, and he’s going to have to take the next step in his career,” said Tobin.
“I’m hopeful. I don’t dislike Jermaine. I like Jermaine, and he could add a lot to us, but he’s going to have to want it for himself more than I want it for him.”
The Bengals receiver room could use the ceiling of Burton, especially if they aren’t able to retain both Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins for the long-term future. With Cincinnati still believing in him, let’s hope Burton and the team can figure things out heading into the 2025 season.
