Matt Stafford won’t be a Giant

The New York Giants won’t be trading for quarterback Matthew Stafford. He and the Los Angeles Rams have come to an agreement, per Ian Rapoport and the Rams themselves.

The Giants were reportedly very aggressive in their pursuit of Stafford, offering somewhere between $90 and $100 million in guaranteed money, and were reportedly willing to trade the picks to get him. However, it seems that Stafford didn’t want to leave Los Angeles.

With the Giants’ preferred veteran starter off the table, the team will have to move on to their “Plan B”.

Or perhaps that should be “Plan A” for Aaron Rodgers.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic is reporting that the Giants are now pivoting to the soon-to-be released Aaron Rodgers as a potential veteran starter.

Rodgers, 41, is currently under contract with the New York Jets but is expected to be released at the start of the new league year.

Rodgers is even less of a long-term solution than Stafford would have been and would almost certainly be a stopgap while the Giants work to develop a young draftee. Which quarterback that would be is still unknown, though a trade up with the Tennessee Titans could be on the table.
