Matt Stafford situation is coming to a head

We could know whether Stafford will be a Giant by the end of the weekend

One of the biggest dominos in the 2025 NFL Draft wasn’t on the field at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The growing speculation regarding Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and a potential trade to the New York Giants or Las Vegas Raiders has hung over the Combine workouts. Whether Stafford is traded — and if so, where — will set the stage for all the moves and maneuvering regarding the quarterback position in free agency and the draft.

That domino could be falling sooner rather than later.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported shortly after the close of Thursday’s workouts that the situation surrounding a potential trade of Stafford could be coming to a head.

Rapoport said, “By the time everyone leaves here at Indianapolis, all sides expect a resolution.”

We reported Thursday evening that the Raiders and Stafford’s camp have reached an agreement on a contract structure. Reports also indicate that the Rams and Raiders are discussing the terms of a potential trade.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic is reporting that Stafford and the Rams are meeting in-person at the Rams’ facilities today. She adds that the Raiders and Giants have both discussed a 2-year contract in the range of $90 to $100 million in guaranteed money.

The feeling on the ground, per our own Ed Valentine, is that if a trade becomes a reality, the Giants are “in the mix” but that the Raiders are the favorite.

That feeling is backed up by Jordan Raanan, who said this morning that the Giants are the “underdogs” in a Matt Stafford sweepstakes.

I should point out that the “if” could be doing some heavy lifting there — at least at this point.

Rapoport also added that it’s still possible that Stafford could remain with the Rams. “Do not rule out a return to the Rams,” Rapoport said in his report. “It does seem, as the conversations pick up over the course of the next twenty-four hours, that Matthew Stafford returning to the Rams is at least possible. We’ll see if it ramps up to ‘likely’, potentially tomorrow [Friday].”

That was seconded by Russini in her Scoop City podcast that it’s still unknown whether Stafford wants to leave Los Angeles.

There obviously isn’t anything concrete in this reporting but that could change shortly.

This is a fast-developing situation so stay tuned for new developments, as well as all the other news to come out of the Combine.
