Is Chris Godwin a realistic target for the Giants in free agency?

Giants need a running mate for Malik Nabers

USA Today recently listed Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin as a potential free-agent target for the New York Giants With the Giants looking to improve their offensive firepower, the idea makes sense on paper, but whether it is a realistic option remains up for debate.

Why Godwin could fit in New York

Darius Slayton’s future with the team remains uncertain, and the Giants still lack a true No. 2 receiver behind Nabers. Adding someone with Godwin’s route-running ability and experience could help stabilize the passing attack.

Godwin has been one of the most productive and versatile wide receivers in the NFL when healthy. He has the ability to play both in the slot and outside, giving New York’s offense some much-needed flexibility. If the Giants decide to draft a quarterback in 2025, having a proven veteran like Godwin could provide a much-needed safety blanket in the passing game.

Injuries, cost

One of the biggest concerns surrounding Godwin is his injury history. He is coming off a season-ending ankle injury, and in 2021, he suffered a torn ACL and MCL. While he has remained productive, the Giants must consider whether investing in a player with a history of lower-body injuries is the right move.

The financial aspect is another hurdle. Godwin is set to be one of the top free-agent wide receivers on the market, meaning he will likely command a significant contract. The Giants, who will have other roster needs to address, have to decide if committing major cap space to a veteran receiver is the best use of resources. There are other, potentially cheaper options in free agency and the draft that could provide similar production without the same level of injury risk.

Should the Giants make the move?

Godwin would bring a level of consistency and playmaking ability that the offense has lacked, but the injury concerns and financial commitment make it a complicated decision. If the Giants are looking for a proven veteran to help a young quarterback develop, Godwin makes sense, but if they prefer a younger, healthier option, they may explore other avenues.
