Multiple projections have now connected Ward to the Giants
The New York Giants need a clear No. 1 cornerback. Both Pro Football Focus and the 33rd Team think the answer could pending free agent Charvarius Ward.
Over the past three seasons with the 49ers, Ward, 28, has established himself as a reliable and consistent presence in the secondary.
The 33rd Team projects at three-year, $45 million deal for Ward, a Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro in 2023. 33rd Team says:
The outside cornerback spot has been an issue for the New York Giants for years. But the good news is that Andru Phillips looks like a star in the slot.
Adding Ward would give them a viable No. 1 outside cornerback that could help slow down CeeDee Lamb, A.J. Brown, and Terry McLaurin in the NFC East.
PFF) has ranked Ward as the 13th-best free agent overall. They highlight his strong grades in both 2022 and 2023, noting that he posted grades above 80.0 marks in each of those seasons, and is still on the downside of 30. PFF says:
Ward’s overall body of work speaks for itself, as he has posted strong 80.0-plus grades in both 2022 and 2023, showcasing his reliability as a top-tier cornerback.
The Giants’ secondary desperately needs reinforcements after finishing 26th in team coverage grade last season. Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen’s heavy use of Cover-3 (35.6%, eighth-highest in 2024) aligns well with Ward’s strengths. Over his career, he’s allowed just 0.83 yards per coverage snap in Cover-3, making him an ideal candidate to help revitalize New York’s defensive backfield.
After watching Deonte Banks struggle when forced into the role of covering No. 1 receivers last season, finding an experienced top cornerback should be a priority for the Giants this offseason.
Given Ward’s proven track record signing him may be a smart move.
