Will the Lions reach the Super Bowl in the next 3 years?

The Detroit Lions are so close. Will they finally reach their first Super Bowl in the next three years?

It’s Super Bowl Sunday, and we’ve entered a new era of Detroit Lions football that makes this day much tougher in recent years. The franchise is now steady enough to compete for championships, but their Super Bowl drought continues nonetheless. I’m not sure if I believe all the voters, but as of Saturday night, 57 percent of Lions fans who responded to our poll say they aren’t even going to watch this year’s Super Bowl. Part of that is likely due to the uninspiring matchup between the Chiefs and Eagles, but no doubt, there’s some residual hurt from the Lions’ early exit in Detroit.

The question is: when will it end? When will the Lions’ Super Bowl drought finally end and when will this fanbase be spending two weeks getting hyped for the first ever Detroit championship game in the modern era?

Recently, the Lions have broken a ton of franchise records. This year’s 15 wins was three more than the Lions have ever had in a season. They’ve also now won 10+ games in back-to-back season for the first time in franchise history. They’ve appeared in more playoff games in the last two years (four) than in the previous 22 years combined, and they’ve won more playoff games (two) in the past two seasons than they have in the entire Super Bowl era.

In other words, they seem close. So today’s Question of the Day is:

Will the Lions reach the Super Bowl in the next three years?

My answer: I have to believe the answer is yes. I do think that their best shots were in the past two seasons—reaching the NFC Championship in 2023 and earning the NFC’s top seed in 2024. Now, the division is starting to catch fire, teams like the Washington Commanders may be establishing themselves as a long-term threat in the NFC, and Detroit is going to go through some sort of transitionary period this year with the coaching overhaul.

But the Lions are still incredibly stocked with talent, and that’s not changing for the next several years. Detroit’s free agent list barely has fewer than five players who contributed regularly in 2024. Lions general manager Brad Holmes has plenty of cap space this year, and his draft pick arsenal is well-stocked. They’ve still got the best offensive roster in football, and that will get them far.

So it’s just a matter of breaking through that final threshold, and given they’ve already come so close, there’s no reason for me to believe they can’t get there in three more tries. So my answer is yes.
