Despite losing to former boss Sean McVay, the Vikings lock down Kevin O’Connell for more years
Kevin O’Connell helped the Los Angeles Rams win the Super Bowl and the Minnesota Vikings are still committed to their head coach and doing the same for them. The Vikings gave O’Connell, Sean McVay’s offensive coordinator from 2020-2021, a new contract extension on Tuesday.
O’Connell, who lost 27-9 to the Rams in the wild card round, has a total record of 34-17 in three seasons with Minnesota. The Vikings are still looking for their first postseason win under O’Connell and they have some huge questions to answer at quarterback, arguably the most complicated such situation in the NFL this offseason.

We’ve agreed to terms on a multi-year contract extension with Head Coach Kevin O’Connell.

O’Connell and former Rams coach Wes Phillips, currently Minnesota’s OC (but he doesn’t call plays, that falls on KOC), have helped build Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold up for their best career seasons while in Minnesota. However, Darnold is a free agent and the Vikings have to decide whether he or J.J. McCarthy — their top-10 pick in 2024 — should be the starter in 2025.
It’s a situation that McVay has to watch closely if Matthew Stafford retires or the team decides to part ways for any reason.
