Rams QB Matthew Stafford says he has football left in him, but won’t commit to any 2025 plans

The Rams have Matthew Stafford under contract for two more years, but the quarterback told reporters after L.A.’s 28-22 loss to the Eagles on Sunday that he would “take some time to think about” his future in the NFL before committing to anything in 2025. That doesn’t mean that Stafford doesn’t think he can play anymore.

When asked if he has football “left” in him, Stafford responded, “Sure feels like it”.

Stafford went 26-of-44 for 324 yards, two touchdowns, five sacks, and a lost fumble in his last game of the playoffs. But is it his last game with the Rams? Or in the NFL? Stafford said he was “playing some pretty good ball” in his 16th NFL season.

The veteran will be 37 next month.

Stafford is scheduled to make $23 million in 2025, plus a $4 million roster bonus, but he has a career-high cap hit of $49.6 million. If the Rams cut Stafford, they would not save any money against the 2025 salary cap, but if he retires that changes the equation a little bit.

It seems as though Stafford was implying that he’s not going to retire, but if the Rams are going to decide to go in a different direction that’s up to the team. That would also guarantee that Stafford gets the $4 million guaranteed in 2025 that he negotiated for last year. Stafford had 20 touchdown passes, his lowest total in a full season since 2012.

Since the Rams won the Super Bowl, Stafford has thrown 54 touchdowns and 27 interceptions in 40 regular season games and the team has a 1-2 playoff record.
