It’s going to be a pretty busy time
The coaching staff for the Minnesota Vikings could have a slightly different look in 2025, as several of their current coaches are candidates for other jobs around the league. This coming weekend, starting today, is going to be a pretty busy one.
The most high-profile candidate is, of course, defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who has a trio of interviews scheduled for this weekend. On Friday, he will interview with both the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Jets, and on Saturday is is set to interview with the Chicago Bears. After not getting so much as an interview after last season, Flores now has multiple teams looking to potentially bring him aboard. However, Flores has said that he’s not going to take a head coaching job just to take one and that the situation needs to be the right one for him to leave Minnesota.
It’s worth noting that, because of the NFL’s “Rooney Rule,” if Flores were to take a head coaching job the Vikings would end up receiving two third-round Compensatory draft picks. I am not entirely sure whether those picks would come in the 2025 and 2026 Drafts or the 2026 and 2027 Drafts, but they would get one each year for two years.
The Jets are also interviewing another member of the Vikings’ coaching staff, bringing in quarterbacks coach Josh McCown for an interview that is scheduled for Friday. McCown joined the Vikings as their quarterbacks coach this past offseason and has never been a coordinator in the NFL, so it might be a bit surprising that he’s getting head coach consideration at this point. He could also, potentially, be a candidate for offensive coordinator jobs, and if Flores does decide to leave Minnesota he might be interested in bringing McCown along in that capacity.
One of McCown’s assistants might be moving on as well, as the Seattle Seahawks have scheduled a second interview with Vikings assistant quarterbacks coach Grant Udinski for their vacant offensive coordinator position. The 28-year-old Udinski had a virtual interview with the Seahawks earlier this week and appears to have impressed them enough that they’re bringing him out to the Pacific Northwest for an in-person talk about the position.
As it stands now, those are the three members of the Vikings coaching staff who are scheduled for interviews. If anyone else draws any interest, we will let you know about it.
