Raiders’ plan starting to take shape
The Las Vegas Raiders have begun the process of finding a replacement for fired head coach Antonio Pierce. Let’s take a look where things currently stand during an extremely fluid situation:
Reported interview requests:
- Aaron Glenn
- Ben Johnson
- Todd Monken
- Steve Spagnuolo
Thoughts:
Johnson would be the big prize here. He reportedly has accepted the Raiders’ request for an interview and he will do so Friday. He is also taking to Chicago, Jacksonville and New England. Those teams all have clarity at quarterback which the Raiders don’t Johnson has been very picky, so the Raiders have to be considered a longshot to land him, but they have a shot. Glenn and Spagnuolo are respected defensive coordinators. Glenn is beloved around the league Spagnuolo has head-coaching experience, he is a big part of the Kansas City Chiefs’ success (getting him would hurt the Chiefs) and he was a respected opponent of Raiders’ minority owner Tom Brady. Monken was Brock Bowers’ offensive coordinator at Georgia and he also coached quarterback prospect Carson Beck there. plus, his Ravens’ offense has been going great. This a good starting point.
Reported interest
- Bill Belichick
- Pete Carroll
- Liam Coen
- Brian Flores
- Robert Saleh
- Mike Vrabel
Thoughts;
Belichick seems unlikely and Flores and Vrabel are getting big interest elsewhere. But there is a reason why all these names have been connected to the Raiders. Wednesday night, CBS reported the Raiders want to talk to former Jets head coach Robert Salah. No permission is needed and he is getting interest elsewhere.
Keep on eye on:
- Joe Brady
- Vance Joseph
- Kliff Kingsbury
- Jesse Minter
Thoughts:
Again, this is a fluid situation. More names will emerge. We’re just getting started.
Summary:
At the moment, Johnson is the big fish, but if the Raiders could land Coen, Glenn, Flores or Vrabel, that would be pretty impressive.
