Saquon Barkley, Jalen Carter named All-Pros by their peers

The third annual NFLPA Players’ All-Pro Team was announced on Wednesday with two Birds making the squad.

Now in its third year, the NFLPA’s Players’ All-Pro Team announced who made the cut on Wednesday morning. As one of the top teams in the league this year, the Philadelphia Eagles were obviously represented with a pair of players. Only the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens, who each had three, saw more players picked by their peers.

Running back Saquon Barkley and interior defensive lineman Jalen Carter earned the nod for the Birds and, quite frankly, you can’t argue with either selection. This was the first time either made this team.

In case you need a quick refresher on the voting process:

The guidelines and ballot for the Players’ All-Pro Team were created with an emphasis on consistency, availability and positional familiarity, including:

  • Only active NFL players were eligible to vote, and each player could only vote once.
  • Players could not vote for themselves or for their teammates.
  • If a player missed five or more games as of Week 15 of the season, they were ineligible for a spot on the team.
  • Players voted for the position group they play in and line up against on the field. For example, centers could vote for: the best center, the best nose tackle, the best interior defensive lineman and the best off-ball linebacker in the league.
  • For the special teams (or “core teamers”) category, various player leaders from each locker room nominated their two top players for the ballot.

In 16 games played this year, Barkley led the NFL in rushing, racking up an insane 2,005 yards on 345 carries (5.8 ypc) and scoring 13 touchdowns. Just for fun, he added 33 catches for 278 yards and a pair of scores too.

Carter, while not quite as historically significant, also had an impressive season for the Eagles. He played in 16 games and recorded 42 tackles (25 solo), 12 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and six passes defended. Just about every week you could find a film breakdown on Twitter of Carter absolutely wrecking some poor offensive lineman’s life which is probably why his peers (aka the aforementioned o-linemen) voted him onto this team.

There are definitely a few quibbles Eagles fans could have with this team like linebacker Zack Baun or right tackle Lane Johnson (LT Jordan Mailata only played 12 games) missing out, but overall it’s great to see two key Birds given their flowers by their opponents.
