No changes at the top for Giants

General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are staying in their jobs despite a 3-14 season for the New York Giants. The Giants announced on Monday that both men will get a fourth season in the job and an opportunity to turn the franchise around.

Co-owner John Mara released the following statement:

“Now that our season is over, we felt it necessary to make this statement.

“Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll will continue in their respective roles with the organization. As disappointing as the results of the season have been, Steve (Tisch) and I remain confident in the process that Joe and Brian have implemented and their vision for our team.

“We look forward to the future and achieving the results we all desire.”

That is, of course, a move likely to be unpopular with an unhappy, vociferous section of the fan base.

Schoen and Daboll came to the Giants in the same 2022 hiring cycle, the first opportunity for each in their respective positions.

After firing head coach Joe Judge and forcing GM Dave Gettleman into retirement following a 4-13 2021 season, the Giants hired Schoen away from the Buffalo Bills to be the general manager.

As assistant GM with the Bills, Schoen worked with Daboll from 2018-2021 when Daboll was the Bills’ offensive coordinator. Schoen brought Daboll from Buffalo to be the Giants’ head coach.

In their first season, the Giants stunningly made the playoffs for the first time since 2016 by posting a 9-7-1 record, and won a wild-card round playoff game. Daboll was named Coach of the Year, after which co-owner John Mara warned him of the danger of going from “Bono to Bozo.”

Things have gone downhill since.

The Giants went 6-11 after a 2-8 start in 2023. They followed that by going 3-14.

In three seasons as head coach, Daboll has gone 18-32-1 (.363) in the regular season, and 1-1 in the playoffs.

Only Bill Arnsparger (7-28, .200), Pat Shurmur (9-23, .281) and Judge (10-23, .303) have lower winning percentages with the franchise.

Schoen and Daboll have presided over some cataclysmic decisions for the Giants’ franchise. Among them:

  • Signing Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million contract after 2022, then ultimately benching and waiving Jones at 2-8 this season.
  • Failing to sign Saquon Barkley to a long-term contract, resulting in Barkley signing with the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency.

Schoen and Daboll will get a chance to clean up the mess.
