That doesn’t mean he will
As the clock ticks toward the end of the 2024 season and New York Giants’ ownership’s need to make a decision on the fates of general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, co-owner John Mara appears to remain conflicted.
New reporting from SI NFL insider Albert Breer more or less confirms the reporting from a handful of other insiders that we wrote about a few days ago.
Despite the ugliness of what is a 3-13 season entering Week 18, and clear mistakes made over the past three seasons, by both Schoen and Daboll, Mara would prefer not to make changes.
Breer writes:
New York Giants owner John Mara really wants to stay the course with GM Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll, but he’s also realistic about where the team is. There’s a lot from how the season has gone that’s tough to reckon with, and Mara will sit down with both guys soon to hear out their plan going forward and make a decision from there. That said, Schoen and Daboll aren’t tied together, and there’s been at least some buzz that Schoen could be safer than Daboll. Either way, the two will be evaluated separately.
Here is part of the reporting from a few days ago:
Mara believes both men are highly capable. He remembers just two years ago when Daboll and Schoen were the toast of the town and the Giants won a playoff game at Minnesota during Super Wild Card Weekend. Even this season could have gone differently if they’d finished games early, before injuries struck, the losses mounted, and the team released quarterback Daniel Jones after he was benched in November …
Mara isn’t deaf to fan frustration, evidenced by recent crowds and planes flying banners overhead urging him to “fire everyone.” But he ultimately must do the right thing for the Giants, not the environment surrounding them.
All we know for sure is that in a few days we won’t have to speculate any longer.
