Week 17 of the NFL season ends this evening with the Detroit Lions traveling west to take on the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers began the season as a favorite in the NFC but have had an injury-plagued disappointing season, resulting in a 6 and 9 record coming into this week. The Lions, on the other hand, have had a solid 2024 season. Detriot sits in the 5th spot in the NFC playoffs after yesterday’s game but will move into either first or second if they continue to win through the last two weeks of the season.

—My Pick: The Lions will cover. The 49ers enter this week with nothing to play for outside of being a spoiler and maybe pride. On the other hand, the Lions are not only the much better of the two teams at this point of the season but also have much more to play for, as they must continue to win if they hope to earn home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Like the 49ers, the Lions have suffered from multiple injuries this season but, unlike the 49ers, have continued to win despite the rash of injuries. I expect the Lions to not only take this game but also do so by at least a touchdown margin.
