Ty Dunne joins the ‘Valentine’s Views’ podcast to discuss why we didn’t see this coming, and what the Giants should do now
Back at the end of August Ty Dunne of GoLongTD.com and I did an episode of the ‘Valentine’s Views’ podcast titled ‘Drinking LOTS of Blue Kool-Aid.’
We were, as the title suggests, optimistic about the 2024 New York Giants. Dunne even said he was “shocked” that the over/under for the Giants, which was 6.5 victories, was so low.
How did we get this soooooo wrong?
Dunne and I were back together Wednesday on a new episode of the podcast to eat some crow and autopsy the patient.
Here are some of the things we discussed.
[1:10] — “It’s the quarterback”
“I know the example would be extreme here in Western New York but if you were to extract Josh Allen from the Buffalo Bills they’ they’d be a six-win team. I mean it — a quarterback can swing things violently one way or the other, so obviously the gross miscalculation by Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll, everybody there running the New York Giants was that Daniel Jones could elevate this team into contention.
“ … in the end you’re trying to see something that frankly just is not there.”
[2:51] — Discussing the Daniel Jones contract situation
[5:02] — Did the Giants really prioritize Jones over Saquon Barkley?
Dunne and I agree that, according to what we know, the Giants only pivoted to signing Jones to a multi-year deal after Barkley had rejected the Giants’ offers and made it clear he was seeking far more than they were willing to pay.
[9:00] — Terrible timing at quarterback
[13:24] — “A maddening experience”
That is how Dunne describes watching the Giants this year. He’s right.
[15:33] — Changes in Daniel Jones
It was clear from the first time we spoke to Jones in the spring that he wasn’t happy about the team’s quarterback pursuit. Dunne provides more insight.
[17:29] — The futures of Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll
Dunne is a strong proponent of keeping both the GM and head coach. We spend more or less the last 15 minutes of the episode debating whether or not keeping one or both is a good idea.
