Would LA entertain a Zac Taylor reunion if he’s fired in Cincy?

Taylor could earn a pink slip this offseason given the Bengals’ 4-8 record

Former Los Angeles Rams assistant coach Zac Taylor is not having a very merry 2024 season in Cincinnati. Taylor’s Bengals sit at 4-8 and are the longest of long shots to make the postseason despite getting career years out of Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase, who lead the league in most passing and receiving categories. Would Taylor entertain a reunion with Sean McVay if Cincy hands him a pink slip?

Cincinnati’s atrocious defense — really putting it mildly there — has been the team’s undoing and might get Taylor canned once their miserable campaign is over. Sure Taylor led the Bengals to a Super Bowl and the franchise’s greatest two-year postseason run in decades, yet this is the NFL which stands for Not For Long.

The Bengals came into this season expected to challenge the Chiefs, Bills and Ravens, but are instead battling the Browns for the AFC North basement. Cincinnati has started each of the last three seasons winless through the first two weeks which falls on coaching. Their sluggish 1-4 start placed Taylor’s squad in a hole they’re unlikely to climb out of. It’s a shame things have gotten so bad in Cincy as Burrow has played at an MVP level all year.

Taylor has seemingly run out of answers and magic, and the Bengals would be wise to make a change immediately to maximize the primes of Burrow and Chase. Will Cincy’s cheapo front office and ownership make the right call? Oops, my mistake, when has that ever been the case?

The Bengals’ coach has worked hard to develop a dangerous passing attack that puts up points in bunches. That alone would make Taylor attractive to the Rams assuming that:

1.) Taylor does not receive another head coaching opportunity this offseason — Bears anyone?

2.) Taylor desires a return to LA to rehab his image across the NFL in preparation for his next opportunity.

3.) The Rams’ coaching staff gets raided once again and McVay wants a familiar face to join him on the sidelines.

Taylor will earn another shot at leading an organization because his resume speaks for itself. Bengals fans understandably have issues with him, but his overall background and body of work will be attractive to a team willing to bet on him. The Bengals’ coach is likely better than the vast majority of options that will be available once Black Monday hits.

However, if Taylor gets fired and needs a place to crash while things blow over, McVay should happily clear off the couch for his good buddy.
