The Giants’ veteran receiver is being recognized for his work off the field
The New York Giants have named veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton their nominee for the 2024 Walter Payton Man of The Year award.
The announcement, Slayton said, came as a surprise during a team meeting earlier this week.
He said, “I was thinking Dabs (coach Brian Daboll) was about to show an inspirational video,
“I expected it to be a team highlight,” Slayton said. “Then he put on the video, and it was a couple of highlights of me. I was like, ‘Oh wait, this is just me.’ I didn’t know what it was. Then I started to see the different community things (Slayton is involved in). I thought, ‘I’m getting something.'”
After pausing the video, Daboll made the official announcement and presented Slayton with a trophy, much to his teammates’ approval.
Each of the 32 teams nominates one player each year for the award, which highlights their service and positive impact in the community. Each nominee has a $55,000 donation made in their name to a charity of their choice, while the winner has a $265,000 donation made in their name.
Slayton received the “Hometown Hero” award from the United Way of New York City at their 2024 Gridiron Gala for his work in raising $2.3 million for children and families in the City. In addition to his service in and around the New York area, he’s also active in helping children and families in his hometown of Atlanta, GA, as well as his parents’ homes of Jackson, AL and Osceola, AK.
Saquon Barkley has been the Giants’ nominee each of the last two seasons, and Eli Manning was named the co-winner with WR Larry Fitzgerald in 2016.
