Vote in our poll
When he spoke to media on Friday New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll wasn’t ready to announce a decision on whether it would be Tommy DeVito or Drew Lock at quarterback for the Giants this Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.
We don’t speak to Daboll until Wednesday, so we might not know which quarterback will start until then. Although, of course, there is always the possibility that the decision will leak out before then.
Anyway, which one should it be? Vote in the poll at the bottom of this post and let us know.
The case for DeVito
First, it is a home game and the MetLife Stadium crowd — in need of something to feel good about — always wants to see the popular DeVito play and greets him warmly.
The on-field case for DeVito is that he doesn’t turn the ball over. He has thrown just three incterceptions in 209 career pass attempts (1.4%) and has just two in 10 career appearances.
The flip side is that the Giants don’t generally score many points when DeVito is behind center. In only one of the five games DeVito has started AND finished have the Giants scored at least 20 points, a 24-22 victory last season over the Green Bay Packers.
The case for Lock
He is a former second-round pick with far more experience than DeVito (24 career starts). Beyond that, Lock’s bigger arm and willingness to push the ball down the field provides a higher upside for the Giants’ struggling offense.
Lock’s timing with Giants’ receivers wasn’t great on Thanksgiving Day, but he had not had a full-speed practice with the starters since mandatory mini-camp. It might be interesting to see what could develop if Lock were given a chance to practice with the players he would throw to on game days.
The flip side is that Lock can be more reckless, making the floor lower. He had a fumble and an interception against the Dallas Cowboys, and could have had at least one other interception. His 2.9% career interception rate is not horrendous, but does indicate a willingness to take more risks than DeVito.
Which quarterback would you choose?
