Tommy DeVito or Drew Lock? Brian Daboll not committing to New York Giants QB for Week 14

There are pros and cons to both quarterbacks

Brian Daboll does not appear to be in a hurry to choose between Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito as the starting quarterback for the New York Giants when they host the New Orleans Saints in Week 14 a week from Sunday.

Daboll watched DeVito go 21 of 31 for 189 yards on Sunday in 30-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. On Thursday, he watched Drew Lock go 21 of 32 for 178 yards with an interception, a fumble and a rushing touchdown in a 27-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Which quarterback gives the Giants their best chance to play functional offense? Daboll wasn’t ready to make that decision on Friday.

“We just got done watching this tape. We’ll see where we’re at. We’ll see where Tommy’s at. We’ll see where Drew’s at. We’ll make that decision today,” Daboll said.

The Giants have the weekend off after falling to 2-10 on Thursday. Media won’t talk to Daboll until then, so we probably won’t know what the Giants decide to do until at least then.

“Well, we’ll evaluate the two games that both of those guys played, and look I thought Drew did some good things yesterday,” Daboll said. “We got to, obviously, clean up the turnovers. Turnovers, the ones that were seven points to the defense, and then back up when we get some points. We got to make sure we’re taking care of the ball. Give our guys a chance down the field to make some plays.”

Lock signed a one-year, $5 million contract to be the backup for Daniel Jones this season. When the Giants waived Jones, he was bypassed as the starter in favor of DeVito. DeVito missed Thursday’s game with a forearm injury that Daboll said should not be severe enough to cause him to miss more games.

Does Daboll choose DeVito, who may take better care of the ball than Lock but doesn’t have the big arm of the former second-round pick by the Denver Broncos? Or, does he ride with Lock and accept the fact that in an effort to take advantage of Lock’s arm strength and willingness to throw the ball down the field he may have to accept more bad plays?
