Former Giants quarterback should be available Monday

Multiple reports emerged Sunday morning, saying quarterback Daniel Jones will have a robust market in free agent when he is expected to clear waivers Monday and he should decide on a new team quickly.

NFL Media reported the Las Vegas Raiders will be among the teams that is expected to pursue Jones. The reported stated the Raiders’ brass likes Jones and the team could give him a chance to finish this season as an audition for him to be their bridge starter next year. The team is expected to try to draft a quarterback early in 2025.

However, ESPN reported Jones is not interested finishing out the string with a non-playoff contender and he may opt to sign as a backup with a contender.

Fox Sports reported several teams will be on Jones, but didn’t mention the Raiders.

Friday, the New York Giants released Jones in a surprise move. Jones was benched as the Giants’ starter this week and asked for his release.

It could be argued that Jones would be an upgrade over the Raiders current group of quarterbacks Gardner Minshew, Desmond Ridder and Aidan O’Connell, who is eligible to return from the injured reserve next week.

Another benefit of signing Jones is if he signs elsewhere in 2025, he would fetch a comp draft pick in 2026.

Jones, 27, has struggled this season and during at other parts of his six-season NFL career. Jones has thrown for 2,070 yards, his thrown eight touchdowns and seven interceptions and has completed 63.3 percent of his passes this season.
