The Linc – Eagles have 2 of the top 3 Defensive Rookie of the Year candidates

The Linc – Eagles have 2 of the top 3 Defensive Rookie of the Year candidates
Eric Hartline-Imagn Images

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 11/23/24.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

2024 NFL Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year: My top five candidates in each race -NFL.com
1) QUINYON MITCHELL. We live in a world where QB disruptors get the edge when it comes to glory, so in the end, this award will probably go to the pass rusher I’ve ranked below Mitchell. But what’s the point of all this if we never go out on a limb? Mitchell has been an absolute stud this season, and he’s been a true lock-down force since the Eagles’ Week 5 bye. In each of his past six games, Michell hasn’t allowed more than 25 receiving yards as the nearest defender, per Next Gen Stats. […] 3) COOPER DEJEAN. General manager Howie Roseman’s rookie corners are showing out. DeJean entered the Eagles’ starting lineup in Week 6, and his presence completely transformed Vic Fangio’s defense. Instead of a question at slot, now Philly boasts a physical force who isn’t afraid to step up versus the run, shows the instincts to feel where the play is flowing and has the athleticism needed to stick with the shifty receivers lined up across from him. Over the past six weeks, DeJean has allowed just 6.4 yards per catch on 25 receptions, per PFF.

Jared Verse or Quinyon Mitchell? Why it’s a much closer race for DROY than you think – Turf Show Times
The point here is that these are two players that have absolutely dominated in their respective positions. Both have their own case for Defensive Rookie of the Year through 10 weeks. In a sense, this year has been like having a Sauce Gardner and Nick Bosa in the same draft class. It’s cool to see two elite rookies having elite level success in their craft early. However, that likely means one of them is going to be left out when it comes to awards at the end of the year. This is going to be a close race over the final seven weeks of the season. While things like overall team success and head-to-head matchups shouldn’t be taken into consideration with these awards, the positive impact these players make on Sunday Night will be hard to ignore.

Daniel Jones waived by the Giants – BGN
Given their self-proclamation as The Quarterback Factory, we have to ask: will the Philadelphia Eagles have interest? The Birds do notably employ Jones’ good friend Saquon Barkley. The Eagles already have three quarterbacks on their roster. I don’t suspect they’re going to displace Kenny Pickett, who’s been the backup all season despite failing to impress in training camp/preseason/garbage time opportunities. And giving up on Tanner McKee would be silly.

Stats don’t begin to measure Jordan Davis’s impact on Eagles’ defense – NBCSP
You can look at the stats and come to the conclusion that Jordan Davis isn’t playing very well. One sack. Two tackles for loss. One quarterback hit. Sixteen tackles. Or you can actually watch him play football and realize what a significant impact he’s having on the NFL’s top-ranked defense. “It’s all about what I can do for the team,” Davis said after practice Wednesday. “You know, I’m always going to be team oriented. The only people whose opinions matter to me are my family and ultimately in this (NovaCare) building. “And when it just comes down to it, I’m just willing to do my job, whatever it takes for us to win.” And Davis is doing that. The splash plays haven’t been there, but for a nose tackle that’s not really what it’s all about. It’s about occupying blockers. It’s about stuffing the run. It’s about clearing the way for the linebackers to make plays, taking on double teams and being disruptive in ways that don’t show up in the box score.

NFL Week 12 picks, schedule, odds, injuries, fantasy tips – ESPN
Rams storyline to watch: The Eagles have leaned heavily on running back Saquon Barkley, who leads the NFL with 1,347 scrimmage yards. Players are expecting defenses to focus more on Philly’s ground game down the stretch, which would put more of the onus on quarterback Jalen Hurts and the passing game. A key matchup will be receiver A.J. Brown versus a Rams pass defense that has yielded 18 touchdown passes this season. Brown’s 88.3 receiving yards per game ranks fourth behind only Nico Collins (103.5), Ja’Marr Chase (96.0) and Justin Jefferson (91.2).

Philadelphia Eagles 2025 NFL Mock Draft: Edge help and more offensive weapons – PFF
Round 1 (29): EDGE Shemar Stewart, Texas A&M. Josh Sweat is set to be a free agent in 2025, so another young edge defender would be a sensible selection for the Eagles in the first round. Stewart has been a solid pass-rusher this season, earning a 67.0 PFF pass-rushing grade, but has really stood out against the run, where he has posted an 86.4 PFF run-defense grade.

Mutual Respect: Eric Allen, Ricky Watters share a special bond as they take a step closer to the Pro Football Hall of Fame – PE.com
Though they never suited up together in Philadelphia, Eric Allen and Ricky Watters have immense respect for one another. “The thing that made Ricky great was his versatility,” Allen said. “He created mismatches and that’s what football is all about. I have so much respect for him because he was able to do everything a running back is supposed to do. He’s going to catch the ball out of the backfield. He’s going to protect and block. He’s big enough to handle the short-yardage situations. Then, he’s great enough and elusive enough to have those explosive runs.” “Talk about a shutdown corner, he could do it all,” Watters said. “He could come up and make a tackle on guys. He wasn’t the biggest guy, but you talk about toughness, tenacity, smarts. He was always around the football. “I would love to go in the Hall of Fame with Eric.” They missed each other by a year in Philadelphia. However, they could join forces in Canton, Ohio. On Wednesday, the Pro Football Hall of Fame named Allen and Watters as two of the 25 modern-era semifinalists for the Class of 2025.

Washington Commanders vs Dallas Cowboys Friday Injury Report – Hogs Haven
The Washington Commanders enter their Week 12 game against the Dallas Cowboys with the benefit of a 10-day break between games following their appearance on Thursday Night Football versus the Eagles last week. The Cowboys, meanwhile, are on a short week, having played and lost to the Houston Texans on Monday night. The two teams that opened and closed Week 11 will play at Northwest Stadium in Landover on Sunday at 1pm. Washington has only one player out — CB Marshon Lattimore, who was suffering from a hamstring injury when he was acquired from the Saints at the trade deadline prior to the Steelers game. Lattimore has not practiced or played in a game since getting injured in Week 8 while still on the Saints Roster.

Cowboys injury report: Ferguson ruled out, Martin listed as doubtful, Bland will play vs. Commanders – Blogging The Boys
After the Cleveland Browns won in a snowy outing during Thursday Night Football against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Dallas Cowboys have only four teams ahead them with fewer wins and currently hold the ninth pick in this year’s draft. There’s no reason to believe the Cowboys are intentionally tanking, more like they don’t have the bodies to compete and the results of what they lack is showing in the loss column. Ahead of their game against their former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and his upstart Washington Commanders, Dallas will be without some key players this Sunday. Here’s the final injury report of the week.

5 ‘things I think’ after the New York Giants release Daniel Jones – Big Blue View
Yes, there will be a market for Jones. Even with his obvious flaws, he is better than a lot of No. 2 quarterbacks around the league. I can easily see a playoff team with an uncertain situation behind their starting quarterback adding Jones to their practice squad and eventually putting him on their roster. Jones will clear waivers before signing somewhere as free agent. No team is going to claim him on waivers and pick up his remaining salary for this year. And, yes, I could see Jones wearing a Dallas Cowboys or Philadelphia Eagles uniform. Look at the Eagles, with Super Bowl aspirations. Jones is clearly an upgrade from Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee, the current backups for Jalen Hurts. Wouldn’t that be a kick in the pants if Jones joined the Eagles and was the quarterback in Week 18 at MetLife Stadium when the Eagles are in town for the season finale?

Daniel Jones’ surprising release from Giants is a cautionary tale – SB Nation
Jones’ release is both a lesson in accountability — the organization directly referencing how he handled “the situation” speaks to that point — as well as a cautionary tale in how organizations handle the position. When the Giants decided to extend Jones, which opened the door to Saquon Barkley’s eventual departure, it was questioned by many around the league. Was his rebound season in 2022 and New York’s trip to the postseason a sign of true improvement, or rather a mirage, built upon a new offensive system and the benefits of a weak schedule more than anything else? Everything that has happened in New York since then perhaps offers the best answer to that question.
