The Detroit Lions signed David Long Jr. to their practice squad on Monday.
Linebacker David Long Jr. cleared waivers following his departure from the Miami Dolphins but didn’t take long before finding a new home. The Detroit Lions added Long to their practice squad Monday after placing starting linebacker Alex Anzalone on injured reserve with a broken forearm.
Long most recently played in Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals, logging nine tackles but also recording four missed tackles, according to PFF. This season, he has 38 tackles, including two for a loss, but has also missed 14 tackles while starting six games for the Dolphins.
Drafted in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Long spent four years with the Tennessee Titans before joining Miami on a two-year deal. His recent struggles come as a bit of a surprise after 113 tackles, nine for a loss, six quarterback hits and just 16 missed tackles while starting 17 games last season.
Tim Boyle joins New York Giants practice squad
The New York Giants are shuffling the deck at quarterback, benching starter Daniel Jones in favor of second-year pro Tommy DeVito. Jones threw for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions while leading the Giants to a 2-8 record.
DeVito appeared in nine games last season, completing 114 of 178 pass attempts for eight touchdowns and three interceptions. Former Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock is listed as the backup, with Jones currently third string.
Boyle would likely step in as a last resort behind DeVito and Lock considering that $23 million of Jones’ 2025 salary is guaranteed against injury. Boyle appeared in two games with the Dolphins earlier this season, completing 15 of 26 pass attempts for 153 yards.
Xavien Howard talks with Cincinnati Bengals
Howard, a four-time Pro Bowler and former first-team All-Pro while with the Dolphins, worked out with the Cincinnati Bengals last week, but the two sides couldn’t come to a deal, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. Cincinnati ranks No. 23 with 225.6 passing yards allowed per game, increasing to 242 over the last three weeks.
Given the Bengals’ 4-7 record following Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, it’s unlikely they will increase their offer for Howard.
