Daniel Jones benched: The only move for NY Giants and the right one | The Record
From Week 1, Jones looked the part of a player who does not believe in what he is seeing on the field, and like it or not, that appearance has not gone away. He isn’t the only reason Daboll and the Giants are where they are, the latest setback coming to Carolina in Germany that served as the final dagger heading into the bye week.
He is the biggest, and as the quarterback, that’s equally part of the job description and inherently true to the results.

The Tommy DeVito sequel, while compelling, raises a different question: Do you really trust the Giants’ current brain trust to pick the next franchise quarterback?
NFL Rumors: Daniel Jones, Giants Relationship Was ‘A Bit Awkward’ Before Benching | Bleacher Report
The relationship between Daniel Jones and the Giants has been described as “a bit awkward,” multiple sources say, especially with the organization publicly exploring other QB options, including during Hard Knocks this past offseason. “It was like flirting with someone new while your date is still at the table,” one source said.
New York Giants bench QB Daniel Jones — what now? | ESPN
The Giants’ players have long been supporters of Jones, even if there was some visible frustration from his receivers in recent weeks. Still, they respect the way he works and comports himself. Tight end Daniel Bellinger said after their latest loss to the Carolina Panthers in Germany that Jones is their guy. “He’s our starter. I think he’s our leader, our captain. He’s the guy we need to be our quarterback,” Bellinger said. It will be interesting to see how this plays out considering the respect Jones has earned, balanced with his struggles on the field, with his teammates.
The Daniel Jones era is over. Giants bench QB who could never find his footing in New York | The Athletic
The injury guarantee is a valid reason to bench Jones, especially as he has repeatedly rammed himself into defenders on runs this season. But finances aside, the Giants simply couldn’t trot Jones out again in front of a hostile home crowd that has seen the team lose all five of its games at MetLife Stadium this season.
Giants ignore depth chart to give fans a reason to show up for games | Pro Football Talk
They’ll call it a football decision. It’s clearly a business decision. Bench Daniel Jones and avoid triggering his $23 million injury guarantees for 2025. Play DeVito, and attract more fans to show up and buy overpriced food, drink, and merch in the four remaining home games in 2024.
There’s another potential financial benefit, for the team and the player. If DeVito can recapture the gabba-good vibrations from 2023, his jersey will show up on plenty of New Jersey Christmas lists.
Is Daniel Jones Benching Rock Bottom for New York Giants? | The 33rd Team
While benching Jones could theoretically give the Giants an in-season bounce, it’s also a glaring indictment of the franchise’s state and a decision that could lead to a complete teardown and rebuild of the organization this offseason.

Giants’ Brian Daboll implies other personnel changes are coming | USAToday.com
The changes may not end there. Daboll intimated that there could be more lineup adjustments at other positions coming this week.
“Personnel groups offensively or defensively, a lot less than this, obviously, where you just see the quarterback situation. But there’ll be different guys mixing in and out and we’ll take a look at some of these guys that have done a nice job since they’ve been here,” he said. “Maybe they haven’t had as many reps or we implement them into some personnel groups. That’s what we’ll do here over the next couple of days when we get ready for Tampa is to decide where these guys fit.”

Giants 2025 quarterback candidates post-Daniel Jones: From Shedeur Sanders to Kirk Cousins | New York Post
The most likely college quarterback candidates are Cam Ward, Miami, Shedeur Sanders, Colorado and Carson Beck, Georgia, as well as NFL veterans Sam Darnold, Vikings, Justin Fields, Steelers, Jacoby Brissett, Patriots, Kirk Cousins, Falcons, and Carson Wentz, Chiefs.
Giants moving on from Daniel Jones was easy — finding his replacement will be the hard part | SNY.tv
Cam Ward (Miami) and Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) are considered the top two options by most. Then you have a mix of Quinn Ewers (Texas), Jalen Milroe (Alabama), Garrett Nussmeier (LSU), and Carson Beck (Georgia) – all of whom fall under the category that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
An assistant general manager SNY touched base with said he had just started his preliminary evaluations, but wasn’t overly impressed. He acknowledged this class, through first pass, is well below that from a season ago. Scouts and others echoed the same to SNY.
2025 NFL mock draft: Giants, Raiders trade up for QBs | CBSSports.com
2. Shedeur Sanders QB, Colorado (mock trade from Tennessee Titans) The Daniel Jones experiment is almost certainly over after his benching, so the Giants decide to trade up, leapfrog the Raiders and get their next franchise QB. And while Sanders’ father has made it known he will (understandably) have a say on where his son lands, New York feels like a natural fit. In part because it’s the biggest media market in the country, and in part because of Brian Daboll’s track record with helping to develop Josh Allen.
This week’s opponent
Jamel Dean Returning to Practice | Buccaneers.com
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have starting cornerback Jamel Dean back on the practice field on Monday morning. The Buccaneers opened the 21-day window for Dean to return from injured reserve, where he has been since October 21 due to a hamstring injury suffered against the New Orleans Saints in Week Six. Dean has missed the required minimum of four games and is now eligible to be activated at any point over the next three weeks, meaning he could return to game action as soon as this coming Sunday against the New York Giants.
