Giants fans want to see Tommy DeVito start at quarterback
Something has to give for the New York Giants in 2024.
After losing 20-17 in overtime to the Carolina Panthers in what was universally believed to be their most winnable game, the common consensus is that change has to come the Giants over their bye week.
One of the expectations is that the Giants will make a change at quarterback following their bye week. Not only do the Giants have the injury guarantee built into Daniel Jones’ contract looming over them, but Jones just hasn’t been very good.
He got off to a poor start against the Minnesota Vikings and capped it with a similarly bad performance against the Panthers. Overall, Jones has proven to be a limited quarterback who limits the team around him.
With that in mind, we asked the Big Blue View Community which of the Giants quarterbacks — Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, or Tommy DeVito — you would like to see start when the Giants once again take the field.
A strong majority of fans, 57%, responded that they want to see second-year UDFA Tommy DeVito be the Giants’ new starting quarterback.
It isn’t particularly surprising that fans want to see DeVito start at quarterback. His stint as the Giants’ starter in 2023 was an entertaining stretch in an otherwise dismal season.
He took care of the ball and the Giants were able to do enough to go on a brief three-game winning streak. Granted, that likely had more to do with the Giants’ defense forcing 12 turnovers during that stretch, including six against the Washington Commanders, but the legend of DeVito was born.
The decision between Lock and DeVito has a few interesting wrinkles. While DeVito has greater familiarity with the offense and personnel, Lock is a better athlete and has a stronger arm. The opportunity to start either could give the Giants a chance to evaluate that player for a potential role as a bridge quarterback (or primary backup) in 2025. We don’t know which passer — if any — the Giants prefer.
One way or the other, we’ll get our answer to the question of who starts at QB soon enough.
It also isn’t a surprise that many fans are thinking back to the excitement that surrounded the win streak. Fan confidence hasn’t reached it’s lowest point of the season, yet, but the loss to the Panthers was obviously deflating. Now, just 28% of fans believe the team is heading in the right direction.
Fan confidence proved resilient over the first third of the season, and generally tracked upward despite week-to-week fluctuations. However, continued losses have worn on fans, and many are questioning whether the Giants’ leadership is capable of actually executing a true rebuild after the season.
We’ll see if any changes the Giants make over the remainder of the season has any positive effect on fan confidence.
