According to Over the Cap, the Colts currently sit at roughly $26.6 million in available cap space for the 2026 season.
That’s the official number, but the real number is lower.
Teams typically need to reserve around $3 million for in-season transactions (injuries, practice squad elevations, emergency signings) and another ~$3 million to account for their incoming draft class (no first round pick helps in this case). Once you factor those in, the Colts are realistically working with about $20–21 million in usable cap space for the rest of the offseason.
While $26.6 million sounds comfortable, $20 million is where actual roster decisions start getting tight. That’s not “fill every hole” money. That’s “pick your spots carefully” money.
The 2027 Picture Isn’t As Clean As It Looks
Also according to Over the Cap, the Colts currently project to have around $88 million in cap space in 2027.
On the surface, that looks like a ton of flexibility, but that number is misleading once you factor in what’s coming.
The Colts are set to lose several key players:
- DeForest Buckner
- Quenton Nelson
- Grover Stewart
- Jonathan Taylor
- Josh Downs
- Kenny Moore
That’s the core of your roster.
At the same time, several major contracts spike significantly:
- Daniel Jones jumps to roughly $46 million
- Alec Pierce jumps to roughly $35 million
- Bernhard Raimann jumps to roughly $30 million
So while there is “space” on paper, a big portion of that will be needed just to maintain the roster or replace it.
There’s going to be turnover. Some of those veterans will age out, some won’t be re-signed, and others may simply become too expensive to justify. That means the Colts are going to need to bring in new starters, and with no first-round pick again, a lot of that likely comes through free agency.
So yes, there’s flexibility in 2027, but it’s not a free-for-all.
What They Can Still Do This Offseason
With roughly $20–21 million left to spend this year, the Colts still have the ability to make a few meaningful additions. The key is how they allocate it.
Here are some realistic remaining free agent targets by position:
Edge Rushers
- Haason Reddick
- Dante Fowler Jr.
- AJ Epenesa
- Jadeveon Clowney
This is still the biggest need on the roster. One real pass rusher opposite Latu would change the entire defense.
Off-Ball Linebackers
- Bobby Okereke
- Devin White
- Kenneth Murray
- Germaine Pratt (re-sign)
The Colts need a linebacker who can actually run and cover. This group gives them different styles, but the need is clear.
Wide Receivers
- Jauan Jennings
- JuJu Smith-Schuster
- Gabe Davis
- Sterling Shepard
With Pittman gone, they need someone who can step in as a reliable, well-rounded option next to Pierce and Downs.
Offensive Line (Depth or Starter)
- Rob Havenstein
- Yosuah Nijman
- Dan Skipper
- Joseph Noteboom
- Kelvin Beachum
The starting five is fine, but the depth is a problem.
Running Back (Depth)
- Dare Ogunbowale
- Hassan Haskins
- Trayveon Williams
Not a premium need, but adding a reliable backup who can pass protect and catch would help.
The Colts are in a very specific spot right now.
They have enough cap space to improve the roster, but not enough to fix everything. They have future flexibility, but not without consequences. And they’re clearly building with one season in mind.
This is a front office operating with urgency. They’ve pushed money into future years. They’ve committed heavily to Daniel Jones and they’ve kept key pieces like Alec Pierce. Now the job is to finish the roster properly.
Because with about $20 million left to spend, there’s not much margin for error.
And if they’re truly all-in on 2026, every move from here has to count.
