With the draft now right around the corner, I asked the following question this past Sunday:
Which drafted Miami Dolphins player during your time as a fan of the team sticks in your head as the all-time worst draft pick, and why? If you can’t decide, feel free to point out multiple players that have stuck in your head all this time as a total pile of suck, not deserving of the draft pick wasted on them.
Below are some of your thoughts and answers-
JKBMia went with Jordan, who I assumed would wind up being the leader on this list.
Dion Jordan is the very obvious choice due to his play, or lack thereof, coupled with our investment.
Jake Long is equally frustrating in my opinion because we took him over Matt Ryan and spent the next 15 years of the draft trying to find Matt Ryan.
Phoenix6 went with a guy who could not play anywhere near the level his draft selection suggested he should.
Which drafted Miami Dolphins player during your time as a fan of the team sticks in your head as the all-time worst draft pick, and why?
Oh, the list!!
But always the first to mind, & I still feel that day of the draft… is Eric Kumerow.
No one, & I mean no one, knew who the hell this guy was, even as his name was called.
Then he proceeded to be Mr Magoo at Linebacker… lost, confused, blind, slow as a cow, tackling like a aluminum leg,
puffy thin plastic covered top,
folding card table…
the one brought out at Thanksgiving as the kiddy table…
& players tripping over him.
He couldn’t wait to get to the sidelines & have a Gatorade, sitting by himself.
What in… dee hell… was Shula thinking?!?
Iowafinsdolphins, who has been a fan for quite a while, is our second vote for Jordan.
Dion Jordan and it’s not even close. Fan since 81
sdphinsfan also said Jordan. That’s 3…
Dion Jordan…I’d say hands down but that’s not really accurate. Too bad that there is actually legit competition for this title….
Dave21 has a solid list, and RIP Pat White.
Y. Green, John Martin, J Fletcher,Dion Jordan, Iggy and Pat White. Should I continue? Please don’t make me keep thinking about this, I have lived through it once, yet most drafts still feel like Groundhog Day!! Here to this year being different!!
ShulaSunglasses points out that the entire Jonathan Martin saga cost this team far more than just a failed draft pick.
Jonathan Martin had negative effects which reverberated through the franchise for years. Not only was he a colossal waste but he took Richie Incognito (admittedly a ****waffle) who was an amazing lineman and leader down with him. The locker room fell apart and the team became a pariah for years due to a lack of culture/bad culture. It has seemed like Brady could deflate balls weekly, Kraft could literally open a chain of AMP’s, and run a human trafficking ring, but we, the lowly Dolphins, were the bad guys. Take our high picks, send us to Europe every year, and put us under constant “guilty till prove innocent” watch. I always breath a sigh of relief when our first round pick is called. While I know under Grier it would never amount to anything, atleast the league couldn’t “seize that one” once the name was called.
Dion Jordan, yeah that guy was a waste of skin and bones. Wish that guy had wonder twin powers and he could go ahead and say, “form of a brick of miami snow”. He would have been more useful that way. Ted Ginn Jr, he comes from a great football family! Whatever Cam Cameron……
The new regime does not have a very high bar to better our previous drafts. So long as our round 1 picks don’t hail from Broward Community College and the University of the Devine Sisters of the Blind we should be in better position.
Lastly, can someone please tell me why Tannenbum is still doing draft analysis? Is this not kith and kin to Jerry Jones authoring a book on aging gracefully the way nature intended?
Wishing a good week to the brethren of the Aqua and Orange!
Miami7 has a good story about an almost encounter.
I’ve told this story here before but…..sorta relevant
Mid-November 1992 – Going down (from NY) for MNF game vs. Bills after winning a Halloween costume contest IN BILLS COUNTRY!!!
We’re in Atlanta airport on 1st leg to Miami. There’s actually about a dozen Dolphins fans and we all knew each other from a bar we gathered at every week for games. We see a guy & gal running through airport – that’s John Bosa (somebody called out)! Most of us just watched as he ran into a jet bridge (after kissing the woman – presumably his wife) and he was gone.
But one young lad from our group had run to try & catch up to him. Standing next to his wife as Bosa disappeared there were now 4-5 of us that had walked pretty close by then.
Our friend was heard saying. “That was John Bosa right”? The woman nodded in agreement.
And HILARITY ensued….
Our friend then goes into this minute long disembowlment of Eric Kumerow, and how sad we all were for Bosa’s injury history but at least he was NFL caliber, unlike the absolute piece of garbage Kumerow turned out to be.
We ALL (Dolphins fans watching & listening to this unfold) ended up on one knee or laughing so hard we almost choked when the young lady put a hand up to silence our friends sorta lengthy dissertation on all things negative Eric Kumerow and said, “You mean, my brother”?
Absolutely one-a the funniest moments I can remember….
Our friend (who was always the loudest & most boisterous & talkative guy – at the bar watching games) just put his head down & kinda slithered away as we just laughed & laughed and kept a trip spoiled by a Bills MNF win fun – if not for the game outcome – at least for the constant reminder of how hysterical that episode was.
For that reason alone Eric Kumerow will always hold onto the biggest bust label for me.
* Though it IS really Dion Jordan
MIAMI235 says it’s hard to argue.
It’s hard too argue with Dion Jordan.
Sammie Smith, who maybe was his own worst enemy and should have had a great career, huge disappointment.
davidson11 points out a player who was solid, but because of who we should have selected instead.
Ronnie Brown over Aaron Rodgers
Finsane1 points out another wasted first-round pick.
Besides Dion Jordan, Noah IgnoWutevr. How he make the first round? Got to be more careful! FinsUp!!!
Phins1972 shows that he/she has been a fan for a good while now.
Charles Harris, Noah Igbinoghene, Eddie Moore, John Beck.
Lefty5150 wants to know how you spend the 3rd overall pick on that dude.
Dion Jordan from Oregon 3rd overall. This was such a bad pick I do not even know or care if I got his name right. Charles Harris is a close second from Missouri.
PA phinphan has two very solid lists and should possibly apply for GM next time.
Total Pile of Suck:
Charles Harris
Dion Jordan
Ted Ginn
Sammie Smith
Noah Igbinoghene
Pat White
Jonathan Martin
Eric Kumerow
Yatil Green
Jason Allen
Eddie Moore
Shoulda Coulda Woulda:
Jamar Fletcher over Drew Brees
Jake Long over Matt Ryan
John Avery over Randy Moss
However, the worst may have been when Grier traded up to get Waddle. Had he stayed put at 12 he could have selected Parsons. Don’t get me wrong, Waddle is good, but I think the net outcome was never worth it. Parsons and a 1st rounder in 2022 would have been more valuable.
Honorable Mention: Tua over Herbert.
Duderino points out the dude that Parcells wanted so damn bad.
Pat White. 44th overall pick lasted 1 season, attempting 5 passes and completing 0.
JUK points out that bad drafting did Marino no favors.
Our 6 first round selections after Marino were Shipp, Hampton, traded away for Hugh Green, Kumerow, Bosa, Sammie Smith. I wonder how we wasted his prime.
Honorable mention to the 7 year spell between 1997 and 2003 when our only 3 first round picks were Yatil Green, John Avery and Jamar Fletcher. That list is somewhat saved by getting Pat Surtain and Ricky Williams in 2 of the trades.
On the flip side from 1968 to 1971 our 5 top picks were Griese, Csonka, Bill Stanfill, traded for Warfield, traded for Shula
Well, that’s our random 15 comments for this evening. The consensus, if there was one, is that Dion Jordan or Eric Kumerow were the all-time worst and either would easily qualify. There are also a lot of you who listed guys that we have mostly forgotten about, and for good reasons. Thank you, as always, to each of you who took the time to join in on our Phinsider Question of the Day post.
