The Philadelphia Eagles are signing free agent edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka to a one-year contract. Howie Roseman revealed as much on Sunday night during a session with reporters at the site of this week’s NFL owners meeting.
JTS, who turns 27 at the end of April, was originally a first-round pick (No. 32 overall) by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2021 NFL Draft. Making 46 starts in 72 games played with the Bucs, Tryon-Shoyinka logged 16 sacks, 22 TFLs, and 39 quarterbacks hits over his first four seasons.
Tampa notably did not pick up the fifth-year option on his contract, which made him a free agent after the 2024 campaign. JTS signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns and he logged zero sacks for them before being traded to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a late-round pick swap last year. He also had zero sacks with the Bears.
The exact details of Tryon-Shoyinka’s contract remain to be seen but it doesn’t seem like he’s guaranteed to make the Eagles’ roster. Philadelphia is likely adding him with the hope that he still has some untapped potential. They had a similar line of thinking with the Joshua Uche and Azeez Ojulari offseason additions last year, neither of which panned out.
The Eagles reportedly hoped to re-sign Jaelan Phillips but were ultimately priced out. There was talk about them contacting the Minnesota Vikings about Jonathan Greenard but he’s reportedly looking for similar money to Phillips. Maybe the Birds will still make a big move at edge rusher (Myles Garrett? Maxx Crosby?) but, for now, they’re not spending big.
Philly’s current edge rushers are Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith, Arnold Ebiketie, Jose Ramirez, and Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. It’s also quite possible, if not outright likely, that they re-sign Brandon Graham.
