The Cincinnati Bengals went out and signed one of the top free agent safeties in former Kansas City Chiefs safety Bryan Cook. That doesn’t mean they have done everything at the position they need to before the start of next season.
That is why it should come as no surprise that Cincinnati has a top-30 visit scheduled with Ole Miss safety Kapena Gushiken. Here are the measurements from his Pro Day:
Measuring 5-foot-10, 189 pounds, Gushiken timed 4.33 seconds in the 40, 6.77 seconds in the three-cone, and 4.22 seconds in the short shuttle. He hit 41 inches in the vertical jump and 11 feet even in the broad jump. Gushiken also completed 18 reps on the bench.
Whether it is just a matter of having an insurance policy for Jordan Battle, depth at the position, or help on special teams, the team needs some help at the position, especially after safety Tycen Anderson left for the Denver Broncos.
Gushiken projects as a Day 3 pick who was on the verge of going undrafted. You can bet after a Pro Day like that, he is trending more towards being drafted than not. He likely will have to make a roster via special teams, but he has the right attitude to pull that off.
