The Detroit Lions contract details are starting to come in for their free agent signings, and the first one on the board is for cornerback Rock Ya-Sin. Originally reported as a one-year, $4 million deal, the facts, as usual, are a little more team-friendly than that.
Ya-Sin was re-signed as a depth cornerback after thriving in that role with the Lions last year. Despite what looked like strong depth going into training camp, the injury bug quickly hit the cornerback room, and Ya-Sin was forced into six starts among his 17 game appearances. In those games, Ya-Sin showed strong coverage skills and a willingness to get his nose dirty in the run game.
So what was that worth to the Detroit Lions? Here’s a look at his 2026 contract terms, as reported by Aaron Wilson and Spotrac.
Rock Ya-Sin — One year, $3.2 million, $2.64 million guaranteed
Base salary: $1.64 million (fully guaranteed)
Signing bonus: $1 million
Per game bonuses: $30,000 ($510,000 total hits the cap)
Workout bonus: $50,000
2026 cap hit: $3.2 million
The structure of the deal is extremely simple:
There is always a chance the Lions added a void year or two, which would kick some of the signing bonus cap hit into future years, but with a contract this affordable, there’s likely no reason for that. But just as an example, if the Lions added one void year, it would split that $1 million signing bonus cap hit between this year and next year for a $500,000 cap hit in each year. That would lower his 2026 cap hit to $2,700,000 but add $500,000 in dead cap to 2027.
If the contract is as initially reported, Ya-Sin’s $3.2 million cap hit ranks him currently 69th among all NFL cornerbacks, and that’s likely to go down as more cornerback contracts are made public.
With the majority of Ya-Sin’s contract guaranteed, it puts him in a good spot to make this roster. If the Lions were to cut him before the season started (but after his workout bonus), they would only save $510,000 and take a $2.69 million dead cap hit.
So why was this reported as a one-year, $4 million deal initially? Well, according to Wilson, there are $800,000 of incentives built into the contract for Ya-Sin. Those incentives are reportedly tied to playing time and team success in the playoffs. If Ya-Sin earns those incentives, they’ll be added to Detroit’s 2027 salary cap.
