Romeo Doubs to the Patriots: What does it mean for the Eagles and A.J. Brown?

The New England Patriots have a new wide receiver and his name is not A.J. Brown.

The Pats signed former Green Bay Packers pass-catcher Romeo Doubs to a four-year contract worth $70 million*, according to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter. That $17.5 million annual value puts Doubs as the NFL’s 25th-highest paid player at his position, tying him with Wan’Dale Robinson and Jerry Jeudy.

So, what does this signing mean as it relates to Brown and the Philadelphia Eagles?

One would think the Pats are now less likely to trade for Brown. At least, New England should be less desperate to make that move now that they have Doubs in the fold and their top wide receiver is no longer Mack Hollins.

But the Pats’ new addition doesn’t necessarily preclude them from still adding Brown. Doubs is currently averaging 606 yards per season; that’s hardly WR1 production. UPDATES: Some reporting from MassLive and NFL Network to match this sentiment.

It’s also possible that it’s not Brown to the Pats or bust for the Eagles. But there currently isn’t much buzz connecting him to other teams.

I’m still of the belief that Brown is a goner, even though I prefer the Eagles to keep him. We’ll see.

*I’ve seen like four different reports on Doubs’ contract value since originally typing this article. SI’s Albert Breer, who’s pretty plugged in to the Pats, is saying it’s a four-year, $68 million contract. $17 million annually would tie Doubs with the money that Rashid Shaheed just got paid.
