The New York Giants have agreed to terms with veteran linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.
Edmunds, 27, was the 16th overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft and the second pick of the Buffalo Bills. That makes for an obvious connection with Giants’ GM Joe Schoen. Edmunds also fills a hole created by the release of LB Bobby Okereke as the Giants look to stabilize and strengthen the middle of their defense.
So what do we need to know about the Giants’ newest linebacker?
Elite size and speed
One of the most notable aspects of Bobby Okereke’s profile when the Giants signed him was how long and athletic he is. The Giants up the ante in signing Edmunds, who has one of the league’s elite height/weight/speed profiles.
The Giants need to improve their play against the run, and having a big, long, and athletic linebacker who can flow to the ball as well as take on blockers will certainly be a big help.
Covering the middle
The Giants struggled to turn the ball over on defense in 2025… And 2024. A big part of that may have been due to coaching, as the team started generating turnovers after Charlie Bullen took over in the second half of 2025. However, having more players who understand how to put themselves in position to take the ball away helps as well.
Edmunds has been a ballhawk at the linebacker position, notching four interceptions in two of the last three years — 2025 and 2023. He has 14 interceptions over the course of his career, as well as 59 passes defensed. Edmunds has allowed a passer rating of just 78.9 over the last three years and just 5 passing touchdowns in 45 starts for the Bears.
The Giants (probably) aren’t done yet
Adding Terrell Edmunds likely locks down the middle linebacker role for the Giants, replacing the released Bobby Okereke. However, it still leaves Darius Muasau as the Giants’ other starting linebacker, and that’s not ideal. The Giants could still re-sign Micah McFadden (unless the Titans sign him first, like the rest of the Giants’ 2022 draft class), but this also doesn’t preclude the Giants from drafting a linebacker in April.
It’s worth noting that Edmunds has a very similar physical profile to Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles as a big, long, and hyper-athletic defender. Edmunds’ presence would also save a rookie from having to step in and act as the nerve center for a sophisticated NFL defense.
