The New York Giants are reportedly “listening to offers” for edge defender Kayvon Thibodeaux, with teams believing Thibodeaux “will eventually get dealt.”
It should come as no surprise a) that teams are interested in the 25-year-old 2022 No. 5 overall pick, and b) that the Giants are listening.
General manager Joe Schoen said on Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine that he did not want to trade the first player he selected as a general manager because “you can’t have enough pass rushers.”
That much is true. The four Giants’ Super Bowl-winning teams are all proof of that.
Schoen also admitted, though, that “we’re always going to listen.”
The Giants, per Schoen, had offers for Thibodeaux at the 2025 NFL Trade Deadline. With that knowledge, it figured that teams interested in pass rush or edge defender help would contact the Giants about Thibodeaux.
Those teams apparently believe Thibodeaux is “available for the right price.”
Why trading Thibodeaux might be the right move
Thibodeaux is a good player, there is no denying that. He is a solid, physical run defender — something the Giants can use. He has 23.5 sacks in 53 games, with potential to continue improving.
Still, the Giants have edge defenders Brian Burns coming off a career-best 16.5-sack season and Abdul Carter, drafted No. 3 overall just a year ago. Reality is, Thibodeaux is the third wheel.
Thibodeaux will play the 2026 season on his fifth-year option, then head to free agency. With Burns and Carter in the fold, it seems unlikely the Giants would be willing to offer Thibodeaux the rich, long-term contract he will almost certainly be able to find on the open market. Thus, they risk losing Thibodeaux and getting nothing in return.
Maybe the Giants can trade Thibodeaux for a useful player at another position. There have been reports that a Thibodeaux to the Chicago Bears for off-ball linebacker Tremaine Edmunds deal has been discussed. Schoen, of course, was assistant GM when the Buffalo Bills drafted Edmunds in 2018.
If not a player, mid-round picks would also be useful. The Giants do not have a third-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft after using that last season to trade up for quarterback Jaxson Dart.
There is also the salary cap consideration. The Giants would save $14.751 million against the cap that could be used to bolster the roster in other ways.
We have discussed the idea of trading Thibodeaux previously. Now that there might be some movement, where do you stand, Giants fans?
