It’s official: the Detroit Lions are headed for Germany in 2026.
The team announced on Tuesday that they will play one of their 17 games next season in Munich, Germany. The game will be played in the FC Bayern Munich Stadium. At this moment, the date, time, and opponent have yet to be announced. However, the Lions have a page up on their official website for the game and will provide updates there as the news comes in.
“We are thrilled to be playing internationally and specifically in Munich for the 2026 season,” Detroit Lions President & CEO Rod Wood said in a written statement. “As an organization, we have invested greatly in the German market and are excited to play in front of our passionate German fans.”
This will be the Lions’ first international game since 2015, when they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in London.
Germany was an obvious location for Detroit’s first international game in over a decade. Not only is star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown a German-speaking player, but the team also recently expanded its global market reach to Germany, among several other countries.
“It has been a dream of mine to play a game in my mother’s home country of Germany since coming to the league,” St. Brown said via the Lions’ press release. “I cannot wait to play in front of the incredible fans that I’ve gotten to know through my visits and football camps in the country. Their support for me and the country’s instant connection to the Lions brand is inspiring, and I’m looking forward to our team getting to showcase Detroit football on an international scale.”
We’ll see when and who the Lions play in the upcoming months. Typically, these games are announced during the normal NFL schedule release. In the past few years, that schedule release has happened in mid-May.
