Malik Willis ranked as top free agent available

It’s no secret that the Miami Dolphins want to move on from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Multiple reports from numerous publications have stated that Miami prefers to trade their former first-round pick — with the caveat that any possible trade would be difficult due to the amount of money owed to the 27 year-old.

If — and more likely, when — the Dolphins part ways with Tagovailoa, a massive hole will open in their quarterback room. Could that hole be filled by Green Bay Packers backup signal caller, Malik Willis?

According to those in the know, new Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley would prefer Willis over other options available this offseason, as both spent time together in Green Bay over the past couple of seasons.

However, competition for Willis’ services may be stiff, as NFL.com recently ranked the former third-round pick as the most attractive free agent available this offseason for all positions.

Here’s what the author — Gregg Rosenthal — had to say about Willis’ talents in the article posted on Monday morning:

I see him as the most dynamic quarterback in football as a runner, and his tape in Green Bay showed incredible growth as a passer over his two years with Matt LaFleur. Despite his limited sample size, Willis jumped to the top spot of this ranking based on the same logic that applies to the NFL draft: If a potential franchise quarterback is good enough to be ranked in the top five of a list like this, then he should be placed first, by virtue of the position. The ceiling is the roof.

That’s high praise for the 26 year-old passer — but praise that could be shared by executives from other franchises around the league, which could cause the quarterback’s price-tag to skyrocket when it comes time to officially put pen to contract paper. With Miami short on cap space, that scenario could prove fatal to their chances of landing Willis — however, the team does have some options in regards to digging into the proverbial couch cushions.

The NFL Scouting Combine kicked off in Indianapolis, Indiana today, and as we know, plenty of rumors begin to swirl regarding trades, signings and draft selections during this time of year, so we will continue to keep our readers abreast of any rumblings concerning the Miami Dolphins as the week progresses.
