5. New York Giants: Caleb Downs, S, Ohio State. While the Giants front office engaged in preliminary talks to move back, the other team didn’t want to part with as many picks as the Giants would’ve required. So the team stuck at No. 5 and went with, perhaps controversial to some, a safety. But there’s no regret with this choice in New York. Downs is No. 4 in Brugler’s top 100 rankings and he’s “one of the better safeties I have ever evaluated,” Brugler said. Downs’ skills are hard to pass up, especially for a Giants secondary that’s been lacking.

Are the pieces really there for a strong defense, or do they need more? The fact that the Giants’ defense was statistically one of the worst last season was confounding, given the talent they have. They’ve got a front that includes Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Abdul Carter and Dexter Lawrence, a solid middle linebacker in Bobby Okereke and a veteran secondary. On paper, they shouldn’t stink. But they did, which raises the question: Can John Harbaugh and new DC Dennard Wilson coach this unit into what it should be, or do they need a talent overhaul? Chances are it’s a little of both, but they need to figure out how much more they actually need.

Grade: B+ At one point during the 2025 campaign, the New York Giants were riding high with the NFL’s best rookie class. Then, injuries hit hard. The Giants were one of the most fun teams to watch with Jaxson Dart behind center and Cam Skattebo doing his best impression of the Juggernaut. Skattebo didn’t make it to November before he suffered a season-ending ankle injury. Dart, meanwhile, suffered a concussion. Considering New York’s reliance on the quarterback’s running prowess, the team played it safe before allowing him to play again.

When healthy, the Giants featured an exciting young backfield. As Year 2 approaches, both Dart and Skattebo must be more cognizant of the risks they take. Amazingly, Abdul Carter wasn’t even mentioned until now. Last year’s third overall draft pick generated more pressure than any other rookie, though he managed only four sacks. Carter will be a problem for years to come. Offensive and defensive linemen Marcus Mbow and Darius Alexander present starting potential as well.

5. Andrew Thomas, New York Giants – 90.3 Thomas missed the first few weeks of the year while recovering from a foot injury, but he wasn’t hampered whatsoever when he returned. His 90.3 overall PFF grade tied the highest of his career, and he placed inside the top eight at the position in both pass- and run-blocking grades. Thomas’ finest work came via the air, as his 3.1% pressure rate allowed trailed only Bolles.

The Giants that made the list were RT Jermaine Eluemunor (16th overall), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (22); Guard Greg Van Roten (101), QB Russell Wilson (111), and CB Cor’Dale Flott (120).

Justin Tucker: This signing would make waves, to say the least. Last May, Harbaugh’s Ravens cut Tucker, who had a mostly excellent 13-season run in Baltimore. Tucker, who turned 36 in November, got tryouts last season with the Saints and Colts after his suspension ended. Would Harbaugh be open to a reunion? Would co-owner John Mara even green-light a Tucker signing, especially given the current Steve Tisch/Jeffrey Epstein situation?

Strictly from a football perspective, Tucker is aging, has missed an entire season and struggled badly in 2024, when he made just 22 of 30 field goals. Is he even worth the hassle at this point in his career?

Cruz highlighted the franchise’s deep appeal as the key factor in Harbaugh’s decision. He pointed to the Giants’ storied legacy and the unique draw of coaching in the nation’s biggest market.

“I wasn’t surprised at all. I think when you look at, obviously, the pedigree of the New York Giants and the history and the allure of playing in New York, and I’m sure part of him wants to be the one to bring that team and organization back in the conversation, back to relevancy on a major scale, and I think he wanted to take that challenge,” Cruz said.

PFT’s Mike Florio writes: The NFL claims to hold owners to a higher standard than players. Whether it actually does is a different issue. Regarding Giants co-owner Steve Tisch and his not-so-“brief association” with Jeffrey Epstein, the league seems to be willing to kick the can until the controversy blows over. It shouldn’t. And the league shouldn’t look the other way while the nation’s attention inevitably shifts to something else.

The league’s power is limited. It has no subpoena power, no way to force the woman to cooperate, if she chooses not to. But the NFL also has the power to interrogate Tisch, and to determine whether it believes he’s telling the truth if/when he denies everything.

The league has done that to multiple players. The league absolutely should do it to Tisch.
