The Miami Dolphins loaded up on ex-Packers personnel this offseason — hiring Jon-Eric Sullivan as the team’s new general manager, while also adding Jeff Hafley as the organization’s new head coach. However, it was another NFL team that decided stocking the cupboards with ex-Dolphins coaches was the way to go.
On Monday, former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase returned to the National Football League after a five-year hiatus — joining the Los Angeles Chargers as an assistant coach who will oversee the team’s passing game. Gase coached the Dolphins for three seasons from 2016 through 2018 — finishing his tenure with a 23-25 regular season record. He made it to the playoffs one time, but the team lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in that Wild Card matchup.
Gase joins former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel in Los Angeles where the latter was hired as the team’s offensive coordinator late last month after being let go from his position in South Florida shortly following Miami’s regular season finale — a loss to the eventual AFC Champions, the New England Patriots.
For the sake of comparison, McDaniel finished with a 35-33 regular season record as the Dolphins’ head coach. He made the playoffs twice during his four year tenure — losing to the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card round following the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Gase and McDaniel will now work under Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh — engineering the offense for the 6th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, quarterback Justin Herbert.
