Giants news, 2/6: Cap space, John Harbaugh impact, Ben McAdoo’s new role

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

Seahawks’ Jay Harbaugh knows exactly what his uncle John is bringing to Giants | New York Post

“I would say you’re gonna hit the ground running,” Jay Harbaugh said Wednesday during the Seahawks media session in advance of Super Bowl 2026. “There’s gonna be a focus on real substance, football and all the things that help you win and none of the things that don’t.

“He’s really ruthless in terms of making sure that the main thing stays the main thing. And it’s gonna be tough but intelligent, you’re gonna work hard but not to a point where you’re put in unnecessarily risky positions or wearing the guys out too much. You’re going to be coached and challenged but not unfairly and not without compassion. He really is in the sweet spot on a lot of things … being honest but not cold-hearted. He’s really a masterful leader, teacher. I couldn’t say enough great things about him.”

Jameis Winston on Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo

QB Jaxson Dart, New York Giants. With Jaxson Dart (68.4 grade; 27th) under center, Harbaugh has a young quarterback he can work with to push the team in the right direction. Dart completed 63.7% of his passes for 2,272 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions in 13 games. He also added 487 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns, the second-most among quarterbacks. Further, Dart’s 5.2% big-time throw rate was also eighth.

Harbaugh has played a role in developing young quarterbacks throughout his career, and will look to play the same part in Dart’s development heading into 2026. The majority of the decision-making in the Giants’ building will go through Harbaugh, who has excellent experience in helping identify the right players and playcallers to put around a young quarterback.

Giants Hiring John Harbaugh Signals Hard Reset, Says Carl Banks | RG.org

“It’s a hard reset for the Giants, and a much-needed one from top to bottom,” Banks said. “I think John Harbaugh is going to be the North Star. Everything the Giants do will point toward that standard he’s been, the things that he does, that he’s about. They’re not negotiable. In the past decade or so, the Giants have been mediocre with a lot of talent and bad with a lot of talent at times. That’s going to change. He will not stand for it. Everybody will be working toward the same objective.”

Banks said the team will have to acclimate itself to him rather than the other way around. “They paid him too much money. He’s making as much as some of the players. He’ll get their attention,” he said. “Change is going to be hard for the Giants and their players. As much as they talk about being tired of losing, it’s going to be painful the way they change this thing, but they’re going to appreciate it.”

Will Giants’ John Harbaugh try to persuade coaching legend to join him in East Rutherford? | NJ.com

It is known that the Giants would be very much interested in hiring Stoutland if he decides to remain in coaching next season. New Giants coach John Harbaugh is still in the midst of filling out his coaching staff after hiring Matt Nagy to be his offensive coordinator over the weekend and the two most important vacancies remaining are offensive line coach and quarterbacks coach.

The Eagles wanted Stoutland to remain on the coaching staff, but he was not going to regain the role of run-game coordinator that had been given to him in 2018 after the team won its first Super Bowl.

“Coach Harbs, we had conversations even before he even had the job and he’s just somebody who instills a relentless mindset from an organization [standpoint], from a team standpoint,” Dart said on NFL Network. “So, I think as a competitor that’s exactly what you want to be in. He has a ton of respect from everybody that’s been around him league-wide. He’s a coach that you can really look up to as a man of faith and just as a man in general of who he is as an individual and leader of men. I can’t want to get at it.

2026 NFL offseason power players: Ranking the 26 people who will shape free agency, draft | NFL.com

5. John Harbaugh, New York Giants · HC. The Giants are a storied franchise with two Super Bowl victories in the past two decades but just two winning seasons since 2016. Enter Harbaugh, a Lombardi Trophy-winning coach in his own right, who arrived in New York unafraid to shuffle things up. Harbaugh could be exactly what this team needs after several lost campaigns. The Giants have a foundation around which to build, but it will be fascinating to see how Harbaugh, who will have plenty of say over personnel, puts his stamp on the roster. The Giants must add toughness throughout the operation, along with the belief that they can contend, and that’s what Harbaugh was brought in to deliver.

The Patriots have a secret defensive weapon: Ben McAdoo | ESPN.com

On multiple occasions, in order to rectify the problem, Pats coach Mike Vrabel called upon his senior defensive assistant to prepare a mock opening-drive script as if he were calling plays for that week’s opponent. That secret defensive weapon: Ben McAdoo. McAdoo accepted a job similar to the one Vrabel held last season as a coaching and personnel consultant for the Cleveland Browns.

Though McAdoo never questioned whether he would get back into football, it took a while to finally feel at home. That is what New England has become, thanks to Vrabel. “I learned a lot from him. I’m very grateful for the opportunity,” McAdoo said. “He runs a buttoned-up program, he holds people accountable. He is demanding but he’s got a big heart as well and it’s been really interesting to see. And it’s been really good for me.”

Charles Cross, passed on by Giants, in Super Bowl with Seahawks | New York Post

The Giants could have taken Ekwonu at No. 5 in that draft but opted for edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux. When Ekwonu (North Carolina State) went No. 6, the Giants chose Neal, out of Alabama, ahead of Cross (Mississippi State).

“I thought they would take me,” Cross said of the Giants. “I had a lot of talks with them throughout my draft process. We talked a lot of football, them getting to know me. It’s in the past, they made their decision, no regrets. It all worked out. “I thought we were a great class. Ickey’s been playing really well for Carolina, I like his game a lot. Evan, I like his game a lot too, he just had a lot of injuries throughout his career. I feel both of ’em are great players and have all the attributes they need to be successful.”
