The Eagles weren’t expected to hire a guy like 33-yeard-old Sean Mannion — a former NFL QB with only two years of coaching experience and no play-calling experience —, but that’s exactly what they did when they announced him as the new Offensive Coordinator. While perhaps surprising, the move was widely accepted as a high risk/his reward situation, and most that know Mannion think Philadelphia was ahead of the NFL in adding his talent to their coaching staff.
Head coach Nick Sirianni explained their decision a bit while welcoming Mannion to the organization:
“It was quickly apparent in meeting with Sean that he is a bright young coach with a tremendous future ahead of him in this league. I was impressed by his systemic views on offensive football, and his strategic approach. Sean’s 11 years in the NFL have provided him a great opportunity to learn from and grow alongside some of the best coaches in the game. As a result, he has a wealth of knowledge and experience that will be invaluable to our team moving forward. I can’t wait to see Sean with our team, and I want to welcome him and his wife, Megan, to the Eagles family.”
Sirianni acknowledged that they interviewed coaches with various experience, but ultimately, Mannion blew them away and was the man for the job.
